UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST LUDDECKENS, LIEGNITZ, GERMANY.
OPERA OR FlELD GLASS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,370, dated August 9, 1892.
Application filed October 20, 1891. Serial No. 409,252. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST LUDDEoKENs, a citizen of the Kingdom of Prussia, residing at Liegnitz, in the Province of Silesia and Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Opera or Field Glasses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in opera or field glasses, and more particularly to the means for holding and supporting the same when in use.
It consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of an opera or field glass provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 a cross-section on line on m, Fig. 2.
The letters d represent the usual lens-carrying tubes, connected by the three perforated plates or cross-arms a c f, through which eX- tends the usual post- 9, having the adjustingnut g. To the upper arm a there is secured a nose-rest b, consisting of a plate adapted to rest upon the bridge of the nose. To the central arm 0 (and also to the lowermost arm f, if desired) there is secured a finger-rest 6, consisting of a plate of sufficient width to afford a good hold for the fingers and thumb.
Both the parts Z) and 6 should be arranged on both sides of the glass, so that the latter may be used with either side up.
In large glasses, and especially field-glasses, I employ finger-rests which consist of the open rings 6, laid around the tubes d. These rings terminate in the outwardly-turned ends e placed to either side of post g. The outwardly-turned ends form convenient seats that receive the ends of the thumb and fingers. The rings 6 arefree to turn on the tubes (1, so that the rings may be placed in such a position that the tip of the thumb may readily reach its seat. Thus the device will adjust itself to differently-sized hands.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of an opera or field glass With rings e surrounding its tubes and having outwardly-turned ends 0 substantially as specified.
2. The combination of an opera or field glass with nose-rest b and with rings 6, having outwardly-turned ends 6 substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 3d day of October, 1891.
ERNEST LUDDECKENS.
