Description

(N0 Model.)
D. W. DE SYLVIA. HITOHING DEVICE.
No. 480,179. Patented Aug. 2, 1892.
INITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL W. DE SYLVIA, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
HITCHING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,179, dated August 2, 1892.
Application filed October 8, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. DE SYLVIA, a resident of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hitching Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for hitching horses, the object of the invention being to produce a hitching device adapted to be secured to a curbing and which shall be simple in construction, easy to manipulate, and effectual in the performance of of its functions.
With these objects the invention consists in two plates connected together to slide one on the other, jaws on one end of each plate, means for attaching a strap to the device, and means for clamping said plates to a curbstone; and the invention also consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aplan view of my improved hitching device or clamp. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
A A represent two plates, one located on the other and adapted to have a sliding movement relatively to each other. The outer end of each plate A Ais provided with a depending jaw 04 a, covered on its inner face with leather or other similar material a whereby said jaws may be made to take a firm hold to a curbing to which the device is intended to be secured. One end of the lowerplate A is provided with an elongated slot 19 for the reception of a depending flange b whereby the plates will be guided in their movements and prevented from lateral movement. The plates A A are also guided in their movements by means of a pin or screw 0, secured to the lower plate A and extending upwardly through an elongated slot 0 in the upper plate A, said elongated slot being preferably covered by means of a plate d, held in position by the pin or screw 0. The lower plate A is provided with an upwardly-projecting lug or Serial No, 408,160. (No model.)
car e, to which the lower bifurcated end of a leverB is pivotally connected. The lower end of the leverB is made to produce cams f,having teeth f, which project through an opening gin the upper plate and openings or slots f in the lower plate. The upper plate A is made with two flanges h at its edges, and between these flanges a plate or block 0 is located and adapted to have a sliding movement, said plate or block having serrations'i on its upper face. The plate or block 0 is also made with an elongated slot j for the accommodation of a lug 7c, and said plate or block is also provided with a depending flange Z at its inner end to enter the opening g in the upper plate A to limit said plate in its outward movement. A clamping block E is located on the plate or block 0 and made with an opening for the passage of the lug k and with teeth or serrations 1; on its under face to mesh with the serrations in the plate 0. A lever F is pivoted to the lug k and made with cams m to engage the clamping-block E, whereby to clamp the sliding plate 0 in any desired position. The upper plate A is also made with a slot at for the reception of a flange or projection. n on the lower plate A. A ring or loop F is attached to one of the plates, preferably the lower plate A, to which to attach a hitching-strap.
WVhen it is desired to attach the device to a curbing, the lever Bis elevated, whereupon the eccentrics or cams f will engage the end wall of the opening 9 and slide the plates A A lengthwise. After the device has been placed on the curbing the lever B will be lowered, whereupon the cams f will engage the end of the sliding plate 0 and draw said plates A A inwardly and cause the jaws a a to clamp the curbing. In order to increase or diminish the extent to which the plates A A may be drawn apart to accommodate curbs of different widths, the sliding plate 0 is provided. By means of this plate the opening g may be increased or diminished and the plates A A thus be permitted to be drawn apart to a greater or less extent.
From the construction of the device as shown in the drawings it will be seen that the jaw a of the lower plate A will be inserted between the sidewalk and the curbing.
Having fully described my invention, What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a 1. In a clamp or hitching device, the combination, with two sliding plates and a jaw on one end of each plate, of a cam-lever adapted to slide said plates in either direction, a slidin g plate adapted to control the degree to which said clamp may be opened, and a clamp for maintaining said sliding plate at any desired adjustment, substantially as set forth.
2. In a clamp or hitching device, the combination, with two plates and a jaw at one end of each plate, of a cam-lever for sliding said plates to open or close the clamp, a sliding plate for regulating the degree to which the \Vitnesses:
