POCKET-BOOK OR PURSE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,143, dated August 2, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ERNST SoHNoPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pocket-Books or Purses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in pocket-books or purses, and by means of this invention such objects as coins can be readily selected or taken from the purse or pocket-book, assetforth,in thefollowing specification and claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the pocket-book open. Fig. 2 is a section along 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, the pocketbook being in position for selecting a coin.

The body A of the pocket-book or purse inay have one or more pockets or pouches. In the drawings are shown two pouches or receptacles B O. The pouch or compartment (J is conveniently closed by a flap D, held to its closing position by any suitable fastening or button F.

The closing-flap G of the pocket-book is provided with an end gusset or catch-flap H, having its end portions free from attachment to the closing-flap, so that the gusset or catchfiap can be bodily lifted into a position approximately at right angles to the closing-flap to serve as a guard for coins sliding out of the pouch B upon the closing-flap. The closingflap is also provided with side gussets Lwhich prevent the coins from sliding or falling laterally off the closing-flap.

The pouch or receptacle B is adapted to receive coin, and when a coin is to be selected the gusset or catch-flap H is raised into a position approximately at right angles to the closing-flap G, as in Fig. 3, after which the pocket-bookis turned or inclined so that the coin will slide out of the pouch or receptacle B upon the closing-flap G until such coin is arrested by the gusset or catch-flap H. By

this means the coin is left fully exposed on the closing-flap, and yet itcannot slide or fall to the floor. I

In Fig. 3 a single coin K is represented by dotted lines on the closing-flap G. If a variety of coins rest on the closing-flap, the particular one desired can be selected, and then by properly inclining the closing-flap the remaining coins will slide back into the pouch or compartment B.

The gussets H I when released will fall from the position shown in Fig. 3 flat upon the flap or tongue G, as seen in Fig. 1, so that the flap or tongue G can be closed and locked by any suitable catch or look L, engaging the flap G by means of an eye M or other suitable means.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination,with a pocket-book having a pouch B and a closing-flap G, of a gusset or catch-flap H, secured to the closing-flap and having its end portions free from attachment thereto, so that the gusset or catch-flap can be bodily lifted into a position approximately at right angles to the closing-flap to serve as a guard for coin sliding out of the pouch upon the closing-flap, substantially as described.

2. The combination,with a pocket-book having a pouch B and a closing-flap G, of a gusset H, secured to the closing-flap and adapted to be bodily lifted into a position approximately at right angles thereto to serve as a guard for coin sliding out of the pouch upon the closing-flap, and the gussets I, secured to opposite sides of the closing-flap and extending along the same to prevent coin from sliding or falling laterally therefrom, substantially as described.
