PORTFOLIO OR POCKET-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,087, dated August 2, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be itknown that I, CHARLES GALLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portfolios or Pocket- Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in portfolios or pocket-cases which may be used for holding cigars, cigarettes, matches, and the like; and the object is to provide a new article of manufacture comprising a pecu- Early-constructed device which will protect the articles contained therein from perspiration and which can be ornamented with an ineifaceable inscription to render the same attractive and for various other purposes.

\Vith these and other ends in view the invention consists of a single layer of suitable material doubled or folded to form the two sides and a closed end of the portfolio and a cover formed of a single layer of pyroxyline material suitably united to the foundation layer. The pyroxyline cover is fastened to the inner foundation layer in any suitable manner and the side edges of the portfolio or case thus formed are connected by lacing or otherwise. The pyroxyline cover has an inscription on theinner surface of the same adjacent to the foundation layer or on the covered side of the inner layer, and the cover and layer may be cemented together, if desired.

To enable others to more readily understand the invention, I have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a side elevation. Fig. II is an edge view showing the lacing which connects the sides of the portfolio or case together. Fig. III is a view looking down into the portfolio. Fig. IV is an elevation showing a different manner of connecting the cover, and Fig. V is an edge view showing a different manner of connecting the sides.

Referring to the drawings,in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates the inner layer, which may be made of any size, shape, or material; but it is preferably made of stiff glazed paper or paper-board in a long narrow strip,

which is doubled or folded, as at a, to form lie close to the same.

The edges of the sides of the portfolio or case are connected by the lacing G, which passes through the layer and cover and joins the two sides A A of the case loosely, so that the sides can be pressed together when the portfolio is empty or expanded when cigars or other objects are inserted therein. The cover is joined to the layer A at the top edges by stitching b; but many other methods of joining the two sides together may be employed to permit the sides to have a limited movement or adjustment. In Figs. IV and V I have shown the sides connected by strips or ribbons D, in Which case the stitching 1) continues entirely around the side edges of the portfolio or case. By this construction and arrangement of the parts comprising the case cigars and the like may be inserted in the portfolio, which will extend to the bottom thereof andwrest in the bent lower end a of the portfolio, the sides of which converge at the bent portion to receive the pointed ends of cigars nicely.

The side lacing O or strips D prevent the cigars from extending out beyond the side edges of the portfolio, and the pyroxyline cover performs the important function of pre venting moisture of the body from affecting the articles inclosed within the portfolio, as it forms a waterproof covering therefor.

To make the portfolio attractive as Well as useful, as an advertising medium, suitable inscriptions, pictures, or advertisements may be provided on the inner face of the pyroxyline cover or on the outer face of the inner foundation layer A, which inscriptions, &c., are visible through the transparent cover, and, if desired, the cover B can be cemented to the inner layer A by a suitable mucilaginous substance. As the inscription is on the inner side of the cover, it is protected thereby and cannot be effaced by usage or contact with the clothes when carried in the pocket. This cover is made of transparent pyroxyline and the finest lines and minutest details of the figures, inscriptions, &c., may be readily observed.

I am aware that many changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction may be made Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of my invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As a new article of manufacture, a portfolio comprising an inner layer forming the body, a cover of pyroxyline material suitably secured thereto, and the flexible connections joining the side edges of the portfolio, substantially as described;

2. As a new article of manufacture, a portfolio comprising a single foundation layer doubled or folded upon itself to form two sides and an end, and a cover of pyroxyline material secured to said body, the edges of 1 edges of the layer and cover, substantially as described.

4. A portfolio comprising the inner layer, the pyroxyline cover, said layer and cover being folded to form the sides or faces of the portfolio, and the lacing connecting the edges of said sides or faces, substantially as described.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a portfolio comprising an inner layer forming the body thereof, and a pyroxyline cover secured to said body and having an inefiaceable inscription on the inner face of said cover, the sides of the portfolio being flexibly connected together, substantially as described.
