UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT Il. THOMPSON, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO TllE THOMPSON d; NORRIS COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEYV YORK.
CORRUGATED PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,999, dated August 2, 1892. Application filed May 9, 1891 Serial No. 392,162. (No modeLl .T0 all whom, it may con/cere:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. THOMPSON, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Corrugated Iaeking, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to packing material comprising a corrugated strip or sheet of paper or like substance.
lleretofore packing material of this character has been made of a corrugated strip or piece of papcror like substance having a plain strip of similar substance attached to either one side or to each of its two sides. Such material has been liable to bend along the lille ofthe corrugations of this corrugated strip or piece.
The object of my present improvement is to obviate the Objection just mentioned; and to this end my improvement consists in the combination of two corrugated strips or pieces of paper or like substance arranged so that their corrugations will extend at right angles to each other and united together. They may be directly or indirectly united, and they may have attached to their outermost sides strips or pieces of plain paper or like substance.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a piece of packing material embodying my improvement, a portion of the same being broken away to better illustrate thc construction ot' the material. Fig. 2 is a transverse section at the plane of the line n: Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section at the plane ofthe dotted line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates a strip or piece of corrugated paper or like substance, and B designates a similar strip or piece of corrugated substance. It will be seen that these two strips or pieces of corrugated substance are arranged so that the corrugations of each will extend at right angles to those of the other. They are united at the points of contact by paste or other adhesive substance, and preferably each will have its eorrugations slightly flattened or indented at the points of contact, so as to make more extensive surfaces of union. On the outer side of the strip or piece A, a strip or piece of plain paper or like substance C C is secured, and a similar strip or piece of plain paper or like substance D is secured to the outer side of the corrugated strip or piece B. The strips or pieces C D may be secured to the corrugated strips or pieces A B by means of paste or other adhesive substance. A packing material made as described will be very elastic, and therefore very efficient. Besides this, it will not be liable to bend along the line of any of the eorrugatious in the corrugated strips or pieces which it comprises.
I do not wish to be limited to uniting the corrugated strips or pieces directly together, because, obviously, a sheet of plain paper or like substance might be introduced between them and both could be secured thereto.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A packing material comprising two strips or pieces of corrugated paper or like substance united, with their corrugations extending atan angle to each other, the corrugatious being indented at the points of contact, substantially as specified.
2. A packing material comprising two strips or pieces of corrugated paper or like substance united, with their corrugations extending at an angle to each other and having broadened contact-points, and also comprising strips or pieces of plain paper or like substance secured to the outer sides of the corrugated strips or pieces, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROB'I. Il. THOMPSON. Witnesses:
W. G. CHAPIN, CHARLES S. CHAPIN.
