nventor:
JeaFA/ajj flags NITED- STATES PATENT JAMES F. HALL, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO THOMAS B. BUOKNER, OF SAME PLACE.
PLUMB-LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,981, dated August 2, 1892.
Application filed August 18, 1891. Serial No. 403,018. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. HALL, of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Levels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in plumb-levels; and my invention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafterdescribed, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective View of my improved device. Fig. II is an enlarged detail section showing various parts of myimprovement. Fig. III represents an enlarged detail section showing a gravity-disk for operating the index finger. Fig. IV is an enlarged transverse section showing the difierent parts of my device in position.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the stock of my improved level, which is preferably made in two parts, as shown in Fig. I, the two parts being glued together after the indicating portion of the level is placed in position; but I do not confine myself to such construction, as the indicating parts may be otherwise secured or placed in connection with the stock. At the center of the stock I form a pocket 2 for the location of the parts for operating the index-finger, said pocket being connected with an opening 3, extending to the outside of the stock, said opening and pocket being preferably made semicircular in form.
4 represents a disk secured byascreW-shaft 5 to the stock 1, as shown at 6, said disk 4 being rigidly secured to said shaft 5. The disk 4 is provided on its periphery with circular grooves 7, in which rest endless cords 8, said cords extending around and supporting the gravity-disk 9, provided with grooves 10, in which said cords rest, thus permitting the disk 9 to move either right or left in a circular direction, always remaining the same distance from the disk 4, and permitting the said disk 9 to rotate on the cords 8, thus reducing the friction to a minimum. The gravity-disk 9 is provided with a central extension 11.
12 represents a link or arm pivoted to the shaft 5 of the disk 4, as shown at 13, said link 12 having its lower end slotted, as shown at 14, said slot passing over the extension 11 on the disk 9 and having a washer 15, secured to said extension outside of the link 12, to prevent it from passing out of engagement with this said extension. It will thus be seen that as the disk 9 moves to the right or left it will cause the link 12 to move on its pivot 13.
16 represents a dial-face, preferably semicircular in form, said dial-face being also pivoted, as shown at 13, to the shaft 5 of the disk 4, the upper end of the link 12 being bent at right angles, as shown at 17, and passing through a semicircular opening 18 in the dialface 16. l
19 represents an index-finger secured to said extension, as shown at 20.
21 represents a scale divided into feet and fractions thereof, (see Fig. IL) said index-fingerthus indicating whether or not the surface on which the stock is placed is level, and, if out of level, indicatingin feet and inches how much it is out of level. The dotted lines in Fig. II will show that as the stock is tilted out of a horizontal plane the gravity-weight 9, always remaining plumb, will move the indi- 8o cator, showing the amount of feet and inches that the matter is out of level; or, in other words, the index-finger always remaining in a perpendicular position and the dial moving to the right or left will show the variance.
The dial-face 16 is provided with a thread or notches 22 on an extension 23 thereof, said notches engaging with a screw 24, secured to the stock 1 by a plate 25. (See Fig. II.) By this means the dial-face can be adjusted, if found necessary to do so. V
26 represents a glass face, which may be secured to the stock 1 over the opening 3 to close said opening and to permit ready observation of the index-finger and scale.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the stock, the upper disk secured to the stock, the lower disk suspended from the upper disk, the dial-plate having a slot, and the link supported on the too shaft, connected with the lower disk, and having an index-finger projecting through the slot, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the stock, the upper grooved disk, the lower grooved disk having an extension, the cords by which the lower disk is suspended from the upper disk, the dial-plate having a slot, and the link supported on the shaft, having a slot by which it is connected to the extension of the lower disk, and provided with an index-finger proj ecting through the slot of the dial-plate, sub stantially as described.
3. The combination of the stock 1, disk 4, secured rigidly to said stock, a movable disk in connection with said stationary disk, a link connecting said disks, an index-finger secu red to said link, and a suitable scale secured to said SiJOOlQSllbStitlltlEtll) as described, and for the purpose set forth.
4:. lhe combination of the stock 1, stationary disk 4, having its periphery grooved, a movable disk 9, having its periphery grooved, a flexible support resting in said grooves and supporting disk 9, a link connecting said disks, an index-finger 011 said link, and a scale secured to said stock, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination of the stock 1, pivoted link 12, having its lower end weighted, an indeX-finger 19 on the upper end of said link, a dial-face 16, having an opening 18, and a scale 21, said dial-face being provided with grooves 22, with which a screw 24: engages for adj usting the same, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
