PATENT ()FFICE.
LEVEL AND PLUMB,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.7 60,91'7, dated May 24, 1904.
Application filed March 17,1904.
bined levels and plumbs; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of alevel embodying myinvention. Fig.
2 is a longitudinal section of the middle portion thereof, showing the recess for the hob and the stock adjusted to an inclined position.
Fig. 3 is a similar section to Fig. 2 with the stock adjusted to serve as aplumb. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on about line I 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on about line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail perspectiveyiew of the bob or pendulum, and Fig. 7 is a detail top planview of the graduated plate.
In the construction shown the stock A is provided centrally with a recess A, in which operates the bob or'pendulum B and above which is secured the graduated plate C, having a central slot 0 graduated on opposite sides to indicate different angles to the horizontal.
As shown, the graduations are on aseparate plate 0 secured to the stock, and-this construction is employed when the stock is made of wood. If desired, however, the stock may be made of metal. The graduations include a central zero-point and numbers running in oppositedirections therefrom and operating to indicate different angles to which the level may be applied and to indicate an,v desired angles at which it may be desired to place a beam or other structure. Above and intersecting the recess A. the stock is provided with a transverse opening D, having an opening or slot D for the pointer of the bob or weight and a line D to indicate, in connection with said pointer, when the stock is arranged plumb or in a vertical position. Side openings are provided at a and (0, extending from Serial No. 198,540. (No model.)
side to side of the stock, through which the pointer may be seen, as best shown in Figs. 1,2,3,and4.- a
The bob or pendulum B is pivoted at B within the recess A, has a pointer B above the pivot B and a weight B below said pivot, such weight being provided at its lower side with the oppositely-facing shouldersb and b which abut, respectively, against pins E and e to stop the pendulum in the position shown in Fig. 2 or in that shown in Fig. 3, the said stop-pins E and a being so arranged that the pointer or indicating-arm B of the pendulum or bob does not engage with the stops E and e, or either of them, in any adjustment of the bob, so that there is no danger whatever of the pointer or indicating-arm being deflected to any degree by contact with the stop de vices; but such stopping is effected entirely I as a plumb-bob.
In Fig. 4: I show the special means for offecting the pivotal support of the bob or pendulum. This includes lateral pivot-pins b, projecting from the opposite sides of the pendulum and entering elongated sockets f, formed in the inner ends of screws F, turned through the sides of the stock, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 4t. Thesocketsf' 5 are of uniform diameter and extend for a considerable distance into the screws in such manner as to form long bearings of uniform diameters for the pins on opposite sides of the pendulum or bob. This form of bearing is simple, durable, avoiding wear on the parts, and when once adjusted will last for a long time without requiring any adjustment Whatever.
The construction of the level as an entirety is simple, convenient for use, and will be accurate and durable, as will be understood from the drawings and the foregoing description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improvement in levels herein described, comprising a stock provided with a recess for the bob or pendulum, and in the same with cross-pins for stopping the bob in different positions and having above said recess a curved graduated face, said stock being also provided with a tranverse opening for use in indicating a vertical line, the bob or pendulum having laterally-projecting pivot-pins of uniform diameter and also having the indicating pointer or arm, and the weight below the ing longitudinally and made of a uniform di-' ameter throughout and adapted to receive the pivot-pin on the bob or pendulum, substantially as set forth.
