SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,818, dated August 2, 1892. Application tiled April l, 1892. Serial No. 427,409. (No model.)
To' aZZ whom t may concern:
,Be it known that I, WILLIAM LAYcocK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago,county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cross-Heads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top or plan view, a part being in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the gibs. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of one of the gibs, part being in section. Fig. 4 is a top or plan view of one of the bushes, and Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the same.
My invention relates to cross-heads for engines, and more particularly to the means for securing the cross-heads to the gibs which operate to hold it in posit-ion between the usual guides.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved cross-head to which the gibs will be adjustably secured and to provide means whereby the gibs may be prevented from working loose and may be readily removed or adjusted. I accomplish these objects as hereinafter specified, and as illustrated in the drawings.
That which I regard as new will be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, a indicates a cross-head, which is provided on each side with a trunnion b.
c indicates bushes, one of which is placed upon each trunnion b and tits closely thereupon, as shown in Fig. l. Each bush c is provided with a shoulder c at its inner end, which shoulder is provided with a number of recesses c, as best shown in Fig. 5. By this construction the bushv c may be turned by using a Spanner adapted to engage the notches in the shoulder c. Each of the bushes c is split on one side, as shown in Fig. 5, whereby it may be increased or diminished slightly in size in order to loosen or tighten it in position upon its trunnion.
d indicates gibs, which are adapted to receive the trunnions b and to slide between suitable guides vin the usual manner. The outer or bearing surfaces of the gibs are preferably curved, as shown in Fig. 3; but I do not wish to limit myself to that construction, as they may be made flat or of any other desired shape, the guides in which they move being correspondingly shaped. Each gib d is provided with a boss e, which is screwthreaded and is adapted to screw upon the bush c, as best shown in Fig. l. Each gib d is also provided with a slit d', which extends transversely through it in such manner as to divide the boss c, as best shown in Fig. 2. Each boss e is perforated on each side of the slit d to adapt it to receive a bolt f, which passes through the perforations in the boss e, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
g indicates a nut, which fastens upon the boltf, as shown in Fig. 2. By screwing the nut g upon the bolt the slit d may be contracted, thereby tightening the boss c upon the bush c and also tightening the bush c upon the trunnion Z2. By this means the gibs may be tightly secured to the cross-head and cannot readily work loose. Then it is desired to adjust the position of the gibs, by unscrewing thenut g the gibs may be loosened, and by then screwing the bushes the gibs may be adjusted, as desired.
That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a cross-head and trunnions carried thereby, of bushes mounted upon said trunnions and gibs screwed upon said bushes, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a cross-head and trunnions carried thereby, of split bushes mounted upon said trunnions and gibs screwed upon said bushes, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a cross-head and trunnions carried thereby, of split bushes mounted upon said trunnions, and gibs, each of said gibs having a boss adapted to screw upon said bushes, and slits in said bosses, substantially as described.
et. The combination, with a cross-head and trunnions carried thereby, of split bushes mounted upon said trunnions, gibs d, each of said gibs having a boss e, adapted to screw upon said bushes, a slit d in each of said bosses, and a bolt for contracting said slit, substantially as described.
