HOLDFAST DEVICE.
Application filed June 7, 1910:
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1910.
Serial N0. 565,571.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OKEY FONNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Terra Alta, in the county of Preston and State of \Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdfast Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hold fast devices, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a hold fast device that can be advantageously used in connectionwith rail joints, rolling stock, bridges, and other structures subjected to vibrations that have a tendency to loosen nuts upon bolts; sec nd, to furnish a bolt with a clamping plate that can be positively locked thereon; third, to provide a hold fast device that can be installed without the use of skilled labor; fourth, to provide a hold fast device that can be adjusted to compensate for the wear and tear upon the inner faces of the clamping plate or bolt head, and fifth, to accomplish the above objects by a structure that is simple, durable and highly eflicient as a hold fast device.
The above and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the scope of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure l is a side elevation of the hold fast devices, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View of the hold fast devices, and Fig. t is an elevation of a key or spanner wrench used in connection with the hold fast devices.
In the drawings the reference numerals 1 and 2 denote, by the way of an example, two pieces of material adapted to be connected together, the pieces 1 and 2 having alining openings 3 to receive a bolt 4, said bolt having its periphery smooth throughout and one end thereof provided with a head 5 adapted to engage the piece of material 2. The opposite end portion of the bolt is provided with a longitudinal bore 6,
the inner end of which is reduced or tapered, as at 7 and communicates with a transverse oblong opening or slot 8 formed in the bolt 4 adjacent to the piece of material 1. The outer end of the bore 6 has the walls thereof screw threaded for a purpose that will hereinafter appear.
Mounted upon the bolt 4 and against the piece of material 1 is a washer 9 and fitted upon the bolt i and abutting against the washer 9 is a clamping plate 11 having formed integral with its outer face an oblong tapering sleeve provided with a longitudinally-extending opening 12 which registers with the opening of the nut and through which extends the bolt 4. The sleeve 10 constitutes an elongated bearing for the bolt 4 and is provided in proximity to the end thereof which tBI'IIllllittGS in the outer face of the clamping plate 11 with transversely-extending oblong openings or slots 13 which communicate with the opening 12 and also registers with the slot 8 of the bolt a. The clamping plate 11 projects from the inner terminus of the sleeve 10 so as to provide its outer face with a ledge or an abutment for the angular ends or rearwardly-projecting lugs of a transverselyexteuding key M.
The key 14 extends through the slots 8 and 13 and has the lugs 15 thereof engaging the ledge E) of the clamping plate 11; The key 141 intermediate its ends and in its outer face is provided a 'iproximately centrally with a socket 16 of reduced diameter with respect to the outer portion of the bore 6. Extending through the bore (5 and having its inner end 17 tapering and engaging in the socket 16 is an adjustable clamping screw 18. The threads of the screw are adapted to engage with the threads of the wall of the bore 6. The outer end of the screw 18 is reduced to provide a shank 19 upon which can be placed the apertured end 20 of a spanner wrench 21 whereby the screw 18 can be adjusted.
The clamping plate 11 is locked upon the bolt at by adjusting the screw 18 within said bolt. this screw when screwed inwardly binding the key 14 against the ledge of the clamping plate 11, thereby firmly securing the nut upon the smooth bolt in such a manner that the clamping plate can be easily and quickly removed without injuring the bolt or the nut.
The hold fast device in its entirety is made of strong and durable metal and by use of the spanner wrench 21 it can be tightened or loosened at any desired time.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. A hold fast device comprising a headed bolt formed with a smooth shank and having its shank formed with an interiorly threaded bore and with a transversely-extending slot into which the bore opens, a clamping plate mounted upon the shank of the bolt, an elongated sleeve formed integral with and projecting from the outer face of the clamping plate and provided with a bore through which extends the shank of the bolt, said sleeve constituting a hearing for the shank and provided with transversely-extending slots, a key extending through the slots of the sleeve and the slot of the bolt and provided with rearwardlyextending lugs engaging the outer face of the'clamping plate, said key provided with a socket, and a clamping screw mounted in and engaging the wall of the bore of the bolt and having its inner end extending in said socket for maintaining the key in position to prevent rotative movement of the clamping plate and sleeve.
A hold fast device comprising a headed bolt having its shank provided throughout with a smooth periphery, said bolt further having its shank provided with a longitudinally-extending bore and a transversely extending slot with which the bore communicates, a clamping plate mounted upon the bolt, an elongated sleeve projecting from the outer face of the clamping plate and surrounding the shank of the bolt, said sleeve provided with transversely-extending slots registering with the slot of the bolt, a key extending through the slots of the sleeve and the slot of the bolt and provided with rearwardly-extending lugs engaging the outer face of said clamping plate, and means mounted in the bore of the bolt and engaging the key for maintaining itin position to prevent rotative movement of the clamping plate and sleeve upon the bolt.
' 3. A hold fast device comprising a headed bolt having its shank provided throughout with a smooth periphery, said bolt further having its shank provided with a longitudinally-extending bore and a transversely extending slot with which the bore communicates, a clamping plate mounted upon the bolt, an elongated sleeve projecting from the outer face of the clamping plate and surrounding the shank of the bolt, said sleeve provided with transversely-extending slots registering with the slot of the bolt, a key extending through the slots of the sleeve and the slot of the bolt and provided with rearwardlyextending lugs engaging the outer face of said clamping plate, and an adjustable clamping screw mounted in and engaging the walls of the bore in the bolt and further engaging said key for maintaining it in position to prevent rotative movement of the clamping plate and sleeve upon the bolt.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
