SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 479,706, dated July 26, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE NELsoN DEX- TER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellaville, in the county of Schley and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention consists in a novel mode of constructing plow shovels and shares of plows, together with their stocks and bolts, by which the same are fastened in position for use.

The improvement, while it enables me to secure at the bolt-hole an oblong or rectangular countersink for the reception of the head of the fastening-bolt, so that said head and upper surface of the shovel or share are flush or level and smooth and the bolt is kept from turning, it also provides separated staylugs on the under side of the shovel or share, said lugs being formed of displaced portions of metal homogeneous with that of which the shovel is formed and they being produced by the operation of forming the countersunk oblong or rectangular seat and bolt hole or holes. lVhile the rectangular countersunk seat and bolt-head keep the bolt from turning, the lugs serve for relieving it from the lateral strain that comes on the shovel or plowshare, and also prevent the shovel or plowshare from turning on the bolt.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a shovel-plow complete with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a broken longitudinal section of a portion of the plow on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a similar section to Fig. 2, showing a different form of standard -for the shovel. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the shovel and part of the looped standard into which the lugs enter, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the oblong-headed and beveled fastening-bolt.

A in the drawings represents a shovel-plow stock of usual construction. The standard B of this stock is terminated at its bottom in a loop a. O is the shovel, formed with an oblong longitudinal slot b. This slot from its under termination is beveled, as at c 0, backward and forward up to the surface of the shovel, thus forming an approximately-V- shaped countersink of oblong form. In forming this countersunk slot the metal displaced by the punch or cutting-die is, simultaneously with being cut through, forced downward in backward and forward directions 1n the form shown in Fig. 4, thus producing staylugs .01 d of metal homogeneous with the shovel. This construction affords a firm countersunk seat for the head of the bolt D and side stay-lugs for entering the space between the side portions of the looped standard. The bolt D is formed with an oblong or rectangular head f, having its under side beveled correspondingly with the countersink of the shovel O, and when it is placed through the shovel O and looped standard B and secured by washer g and nut g the shovel will be held by the lugs from turning and the bolt relieved from the lateral strain which comes upon the shovel, and at the same time the oblong rectangular head f of the bolt has its upper surface flush and smooth with the top of the shovel and said bolt is kept from turning in the standard and shovel.

This simple and useful improvement in plows can be applied to wooden or solid standardsB by forming a recess h in such standards, as shown in Fig 3.

WVhat I claim as my improvement is 1. The withindescribed improvement in plows, consisting in a shovel or share formed with countersunk slot having beveled surfaces above the bottom surface of the shovel and stay, lugs of homogeneous metal extending below the bottom surface of the shovel, and a fastening-bolt having a head corresponding in form to the slot and set therein so'as to have the top of its head flush with the top surface of the shovel, and a standard which receives the lugs, substantially as described.

2. The improved new article of manufacture, consisting of the shovel or share formed with the bolt-hole having acountersunk seat between its top and bottom surfaces and with lugs of homogeneous metal projecting from its under surface immediately at the countersunk seat, substantially as described.
