Description

V.'R. DAVIS.
" Plow-Stock.
No. 208,664. Patented Oct. 1,1878,
ywwgw i y @4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VAN It. DAVIS, OF BUCHANAN, ASSIGNOR OF TlVO-THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO A. WESTBROOKS, J. G. WESTBROOKS, AND W. A. VESTBROOKS, OF ROCK MART, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW-STOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,664, dated October 1, 1878; application filed August 16, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, V. R. DAVIS, of Buchanan, in the county of Haralson and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Stocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference to arked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of a plow embodyin g the improvements in my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rear end of the plow.
This invention has relation to plows; and consists in the improvements in the construction of the same hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Heretofore plows of this class have had their shanks secured, where they have extended above the beam,by bolts, in such manner that their connections were not rigid, but formed pivoted points. In my improvement I make the connections rigid, so that the strain that would ordinarily come upon the point of the plow will be distributed between the beam, handles, and braces, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The shank A is formed from a single piece of metal, constructed as shown, with a forked upper end extending upward around the rear end of the plow-beam D, as shown at B, encircling it and inclosing the lower end of the wooden brace E, and provided at its lower end with an oblong opening, (I, to receive the bolt which secures the shovel-blade.
A bolt or brace, F, passes through the shank A and the rear end of the beam D. Two other bolts pass through the upper forked end of the shank A and the lower end of .the wooden brace E. The wooden brace E is not mortised in the beam D, the bolts G and H sufiicing to hold it firmly in the bifurcated end of the shank A.
The handles K are connected to the crosspiece I and to the beam in the usual manner.
This construction is cheap and simple, and forms a rigid plow-stock, which is less liable to be broken or get out of repair than other plows heretofore used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a plow, the shank A, formed from a single piece, and having the oblong opening d, and forked or separated, so as to encompass the extremerear end of the beam D, and rigidly secured thereto, then continuing above said beam on each side and rigidly secured to the brace E, in combination with the brace F, beam D, and handles K, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VAN It. DAVIS.
