Description
T. TINKLER (No Model.)
PLOW.
Paten ted July 19, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS TINKLER, OF VVHITOHUROH, CANADA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,036,6lated July 19, 1892. Application filed Angust 24, 1891. Serial No. 403,517- (No model.) Patented in Canada April 21, 1891, No. 36,433.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS TINKLER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at the township of Whitchurch, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, Canada, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Agricultural Plows, (for which I have obtained a patent in Canada, No. 36,433, dated 21st day of April, 1891,) of which the following is a specification.
Reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which similar numbers of reference refer to similar parts throughout, Figure 1 represents aperspective view of a front portion of a plow provided with myimprovements. Fig. 2 represents a plan of the foregoing figure, and Fig. 3 represents 'a front elevation of the same.
My invention relates particularly to an attachment for plows whereby the width and depth of furrow or score can be regulated and whereby a plow can be worked without the constant guidance of a skilled operator, as a plow provided with my invention will automatically work in all but exceptional cases without any other attention than being properly placed at the beginning of each furrow.
The beam 1 of the plow in some cases requires an additional or extra length to adapt it to the use of my improvements, and when necessary the same is put on the front end, so that my attachment can be secured to operate in front of the colter 2 and the share 3.
Near the front end of the beam 1 is secured by bolts or any other adapted means the keeper 4, preferably of metal and having an opening therein to contain and secure vertically the standard 5 by means of a set or clamp screw 6 in said keeper 4. The standard 5 is preferably square in cross-section and may have a series of indentations 7, as shown,
. in any one of which the point of the screw 6 can be secured to insure against slipping or displacement. The standard 5 has a T-head formed on its lower end, which terminates at each side in lugs 8, turned at right angles to the T-head, and in which there is a square hole (preferably) to receive and secure the cross-bar 9. In the T-head of the standard 5 another clamp-screw 10 is provided to engage the cross-bar 9 similarly as the screw 6 in the keeper 4.
The cross-bar 9 has a bearing formed on its right extremity to carry the furrow-wheel 11 thereon, and by a deflection in the said crossbar 9 at the wheel-bearing the said wheel 11 inclines outward slightly in excess of a right angle with the cross-bar 9 at its upper side, so that the rim 12 of the wheel 11 runs against the vertical side of the land, as seen in Fig. 3, and forms a gage to the colter 2 in rear in cutting the new furrow. 7 Besides regulating the width of the furrow, the wheel 11 also regulates the depth of the same by the position at which the standard5is clamped in the keeper 4, which elevates or depresses the share 3, cutting the under face of the score.
On the cross-bar 9 may be a series of marks 13 as a guide to set the same by with regard to the lugs 8 on the standard 5.
On the left or land side of the plow is provided a land-wheel 14,"carried on a suitable bearing on a second standard 15, secured by a set-screw 16, and in a keeper. 17, similar to that securing the furrow-wheel 11; but instead of having a cross-bar, as in thefurrow-wheel 11 hereinbefore described, there is a curve on the lower extremity at 18 on said standard 15 to set the wheel 14 out on the land asafe supporting distance and to act by leverage to maintain the plow in the desired plane. The land-wheel 14 is secured about midway between the colter 2 and the furrow-wheeLll and resembles the wheel used on plows in the past at the front end of the beam 1 instead of midway back, as in my improvements.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a plow, the combination of the furrowwheel secured to revolve on the end of the cross-bar adj ustably secured in the T-headed lower extremity of avertical standard adj ustably secured toward its upper extremity to the front end of the plow-beam, the whole to regulate the width and depth of the score, and the land-wheel secured to revolve on the lower extremity of another vertical standard adjustably secured to the plow-beam at a point conveniently in rear of the standard' of the furrow-wheel to maintain the plow at right angles to the surface of the land, substantially as shown and described.
Stoulfville, Ontario, May 22, 1891.
