LAMP-CHIMNEY RAISER.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWIN M. GOLDSMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Ohimney Raisers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists in providing the chimney of a lamp with means, substantially as hereinafter described, for mechanically raising the same, so that access may be had to the burner or for other purposes without direct engagement or contact of the hand with the chimney.

Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a lamp-chimney raiser embodying my inven tion. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the burner portion of a lamp of anydesired construction.

B designates a rising-and-falling plate of annular form, the same supporting the lampchimney and provided with elastic fingers O for firmly retaining said chimneyin position. On said plate B are vertically arranged sleeves D, through which are freely passed the rods E, the latter being secured to a collar F, which is fixed in any suitable manner to a proper portion of the lamp below the burner. To said collar or portion is attached an ear G, 011 which is mounted a bifurcated lever H, the latter having a thumb or finger portion J and a limb K, the latter being formed with upturned lips L at its ends to prevent disengagement of the lever from the plate when the latter is raised. Projecting horizontally from the plate B are pins M, the same being above the limb K of the lever and so disposed in relation thereto that when the lever is operated said limb rides against said pins M, whereby the plate B and parts carried by the same are elevated.

The operation is as follows, the parts being shown in normal position in Fig. 1: When it is desired to raise the chimney in order to light the lamp or for other purposes, the portion J of the lever is depressed, whereby the limb K thereof rises, and as the latter bears upwardly against the pins M the plate 13, and consequently the 1amp-chi1nney, are elevated, whereby the burner is accessible. A match or other lighting medium may now be applied to the burner below the bottom of the chimney, the efiect of which is evident. It is evident that when pressure is released from the portion J of the lever the limb K lowers, and with it the lamp-chimney. The rising motion of the chimney is limited by the lips L, which engage with the pins M, and also prevent said pins from passing under the lever. The motions of the plate Bare guided by the'sleeves D and rods E, so that the chimney is steadied and prevented from overturning.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a lamp chimney raiser, the combination of a plate for supportingachimney,having sleeves thereon and pins projecting from the edge thereof, rods supported by the lampneck and freely passing through said sleeves, and-a bifurcated lever pivotally connected to the lamp-neck and adapted to bear-against the pins on said plate to raise the chimney and plate, said lever having lips at its ends to prevent; disengagement of said lever from the plate when the latter is raised, substantially as described.
