Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM I FREDERICK, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE ATMOSPHERIC PAINT COMPOUND COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PAINT COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,110, dated'J'une 14, 1892.
Application filed September 29, 1891- Serial No. 07,l87. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. FREDERICK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvemeutin Paint Compounds; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a preparation which is especially valuable for the purpose of mixing with ordinary paints.
It consists of ingredients compounded in the manner and proportions as hereinafter described.
In the manufacture of my compound I take in the proportion of two ounces chloride of sodium, one ounce saltpeter, one ounce oxalic acid, fifteen to twenty pounds of French chalk, one gallon of rawliuseed-oil. The chloride of sodium and the saltpeter are properly dissolved and are then mixed with the oxalic acid and linseed-oil, and the French chalk is gradually stirred in until a smooth and even mixture is made. I
The proportions herein described may be slightly varied Without materially altering the character of my compound. This preparation is then mixed with any ordinary paint in the ratio of about one pound of the compound to four of the paint. It is intimately mixed with the paint, with which it readily blends, and the effect is to cause the paint to spread more easily and cover a greater surface. \Vhen dry the coatins becomes impervious to moisture, the wood is prevented from shrinking or Warping, and it will not check or crack. With this auxiliary a coat of paint will last three times as long as when put on without this addition. It is especially valuable for house painting, inside and outside work, and for sea- 0 going vessels, as it entirely resists the action of saline fogs and salt-water.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A compound consisting of chloride of sodium, salt-peter, oxalic acid, French chalk, and raw linseed-oil mixed in the proportions herein described.
2. The combination, with a paint compound, of an auxiliary compound consisting of chloride of sodium, saltpeter, oxalic acid, French chalk, and raw linseed-oil, mixed with the paint in proportions substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM B. FREDERICK.
