Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JEROME MOARTHUR, OF MOUNT MORRIS, NEV YORK.
PAINT COMPOSITION.
[BFECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,540, dated March 23. 1886.
Application filed November 19, 1885. Serial No. 183,312.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JEROME McARTHUR, of Mount Morris, in the county of Livingston, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Composition of Matter to be Used with Paints, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated, viz: soft water, four gallons; soda, onehalf pound; shellac, one pound; turpentine, one quart; arsenic, four grains. These ingredients are to be mingled in the following manner: The water is to be heated to 212 Fahrenheit, or boiling temperature; then the soda is introduced in said water, and then the sheland cooled, and when this is accomplished it isready for use.
The compound is afiuid, which can be boiled (No specimens.)
down to any desired consistency, according to the use to which it is applied. It is designed, chiefly, as a mixture with ordinary paints, to which it imparts a beautiful gloss, and renders it much harder when dry than ordinary lead and oil, and, aside from increasing the quantity of the paint, it also renders it more durable; but the said compound can be boiled down to a degree of density which adapts it for covering knots in lumber and for staining lumber.
Having described my invention, What I claim is The herein-described composition of matter to be used in connection with paints, consisting of soft water, soda, shellac, turpentine, and arsenic, in about the proportions specified.
In testimony whereof Ihavehereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Mount Morris, in the county of Livingston, in the State of New York, this 12th day of October, 1885.
JEROME MCARTHUR. [L s.]
Witnesses:
H. E. BROWN, WVILLIAM G. BLACK.
