Description
- the UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DE WITT O. OOOLEY, OF AURORA, AND CHARLES H. PARKER, OF CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS.
WOOD-FILLING COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,982, dated June 22, 1880. Application filed March 1, 1880. (Specimena) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known we, DE WITT (J. GooLEY, of
Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, and CHARLES H. PARKER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, in said State, both citizens of the United States of America, have jointly invented a new and useful composition of matter to be used for filling the pores of wood preparatoryto the application of either paint or varnish, of which composition or compound the following is a specification.
, Our composition or compound consists of the following ingredients, which are combined in about the proportion below given; to wit: French talc, one hundred pounds; sulphate of baryta, seventy-five pounds; marble-dust, fifty pounds; boiled linseed-oil, five gallons; japan, four gallons; glycerine, one pint. These ingredient-s we thoroughly mix and grind together in a common paint-mill in the usual manner, and when this has been done the composition or compound resulting will bein paste form and ready for use.
This fillingmay be applied to the wood in the mannerin which compositions or compounds of same class are usually applied, and one coat of filling will usually be sufficient; but two or more may be applied to very porous wood if one coat shall not be deemed enough. After the filling has become dry the wood may be either painted or varnished, or may receive The composition above described will be of light color; but the color may be changed or varied by mixingin therewith any well-known 3 5 coloring-matter in the usual manner, the coloring material to be used depending upon the color desired to be produced.
The composition may also be reduced from paste form to liquid form by adding turpen- 4o tine and benzine, or in any other well-known way but we do not here intend to be restricted either to any particular way of coloring our composition or to any precise mode of reducing its consistency, as it is in its original 0011- 5 dition useful for the purpose for which it is intended. i
This composition or compound will be economical, will not swell the wood, and the ingredients will not be liable to separate or form a sediment after standing.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described composition of matter or compound for filling the pores of Wood pre- 5 5 paratory to the application of either paint, varnish, or oil-finish, and consisting of French talc, sulphate of baryta, marble-dust, boiled linseed-oil, japan, and glycerine, in about the proportions hereinbefore specified.
