specificationformingpart of Letters Patent uo. 47,708, daten MeyV 1e, 1865.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS FAaNswonrH, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga `and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mangling-Machines and 1 do hereby declarethat the' following is a full and complete descriptiof of the construction and operation of the same, reference being `had to the accompanying drawings,
y making apart of this specilication, in whichview of the mangle. Fig.` 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is an en d view. Fig.
Figure 1 is a top 4. is a sectional view. Y l
Like letters of reference refer The -frame of the mangle consists of standards C C, secured to aframe, D, at the lower ends. From this framel extend up braces b, that are secured to the standards.
vA and B aretwo rollers. The journals of `the roller A have their bearings in the standards C,- and on the journal at one end there ip s a gear-wheel, E, that is'turned by a pinion,
4F, onfthe end of the countershaft I, by lwhich 'the roller A is revolved, a crank, YI', being on the other end of thercountershaft.
C is a 'gear-wheel o n the journalat one end ofthe roller A, that works in a gear, H, on the journal at one end of the 'roller B, by which this roller is revolved.
The journals of 'the lower roller, B, have their bearings in hangers J, that extend down inside of the standards, and 4 and indicated by the dotted lines J in Fig. 2. These hangers are slotted out in the middle the ,widthlof the journal-shafts, through which the journals of the roller A pass. The 'standard (l are slotted out in a similar man? ner, excepting where the journals ofthe roller' to like parts as shown in Figs'.- 3'
A d', against which the outer ends of the spring press. By turning the screwwheels in one direction the pressurebetween the rollers can be' increased, as it elevates the hangers, bringing the under roller in closer contact 'with the upperfrollerfand by reversingthe Y setscrews the pressure can bejdecreased. The
pressure at the Sametime is rendered elastic or yielding by means of the springm4 under the screw-wheels, which allows the under roller to adjustits'elf to thev bulk of material passing between the roller The cogs or fingers of the gears G and are so deep, and work in each other in such a way, that the roller B can belowered as n much as may be desired without putting them out of gear.` 4
O and P are tables on each side of the rollers, supported .at theinner ends by a shait,
gextendingalong the-end of the tables into the braces b,- s o as to allo'wthe tables to be fturned'upA out of the way asindioated by the dotted lines B in Fig. 2. At the outer ends Aof the tables there are rollers h, that are supported and turn in pieces screwed along the sides of the tables, as represented. 4These pieces are formed `into a catch, 1', at the outer ends, overwhich a cordv or str-ap is placed when' the 'tables are turnedaup out ofthe way, asfnoted in Fig. 2, to retaini-tliem in. that position. Over the tables, betweenjjlhlfrollers A and'B and under the roller B over ith h, at the ends of the tables, there issu apron, R, on which the clothes are pl be guided between and from the rollers.
`1p p are springs, between which on'eaeh side of the roller B there is a rod, la, that extends along under the apron, keeping it at theproper tension over the rollers. v
In .practical operation, the clothes to be mangled ,arel prepared and placed on the apron, by which they' are carried between the rollers when the orankis turned, and brought out on the other side on the table pressed smooth. The amount of pressure on the clothes to be mangled is adjusted by the setscrews d, as before stated.
the tables-are supported, by tending down from the sides. l
In place ot' having the endless apron pass standards l., exl
stesi a The outer ends of' under; the rollers B', the man gle een be placed l. 2. The springs P and rollers lapin combinaon stable, and the apronl passed round the tion with the tables O P and apron `R, when ends or sides ot' the-table and underneathit. arranged andoperatng in thejmanner and What Ielaim as my improvement, and. de; for the purpose described.. l I sire to' secure by Letters Patent, ls-
,1. The arrangement of the lmngrJ and l A THOMAS FARNSWORTH rollers A B, ill-combination with the springA Witnesses: m, screws d, and gearing G H, substantially y W. H. BUBRIDGE,
as'ad-for the purpose specified. vv A. W. MOCLELLAND.
