SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,888, dated June 14, 1892.

To au whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY W. MATTHIES, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented anew and usefulImprovement in Check-Receptacles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let-- ters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to that description of boxes or receptacles for cards or checks in which the cards or checks are intended to be drawn out of the box one at a time, vand is intended to reduce the cost of manufacture, to facilitate the introduction and removal of cards or checks, and to make the plate bearing the num ber or design designating the box itself readily removable.

In the drawings, Figure l is a front view of the box. Fig. 2 is a Vertical section thereof on the line a: .fr of Fig. l, showing checks in position therein. Fig. 3 is a top View thereof, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line y y of Fig. l.

In the construction shown the back B of the box A is provided with means, as perforated ears b b, by which it may be secured to a wall, coat-box, or any plane surface to which it may bo desired to attach it. The sides C C of the box A are grooved or channeled on their inn ner surface to admit the edges of the removable plato D, and the grooves E E so formed are open at their upper ends to permit the insert-ion or withdrawal of the plate DA at the top of the box A. The top of the box is open and has a rim H projecting inward sufficiently to overlap the edges of the checks K when the latter are in position. The plate D bears a character designating the box, and the y checks K bear corresponding characters.

The front of the box preferably is open to facilitate the introduction of the checks and is crossed near' its upper edge by the bar J, which is so placed as to leave a space between its upper edge and the lower surface of the rim suiiicient to permit the passage of a check K. The cheeks K are placed in column in the space formed by the removable plate D, the back B, and the sides C C, and the column of checks is held closely against the rim H .and under constant spring-pressure by the springfollower M, resting against the bottom G of the box A.

By reason of the fact that the designatingplate D is an independent and separate part the main body of the receptacle can be cast in quantities at little expense, While the plates may be separately formed and subsequently applied to the receptacle. Furthermore, said plates are readily removable for the purpose of introducing the checks and also to permit the numbers of a series of coat hooks or boxes or other articles to which the device may be applied to be changed whenever desired.

I claim as my invention* The combination of a box or receptacle for checks or cards, means to secure it to a fixed object, said receptacle having an open top with an inwardly-projecting rim and having an open front with a cross-bar slightly below the said rim to leave a space for the passage of a single check, the sides of said receptacle near the front and within the line of said cross-bar being formed with channels or grooves, anda plate bearing a number or character designating said receptacle inserted in said channels or grooves, substantially as shown and described.
