Be it known that I, HENRY L. STANTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Savings-Banks, of which the following is a specication. Y

This invention is in the nature of a savings bank which is adapted to be carried with facility in the pocket, when it is to be taken to a savings bank institution for the purpose of depositing the money contained therein. Ordinarily the banking institution retains the key to the savings bank, the depositor bringing thesavings bank to the banking institution at intervals.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and secure savings bank, or savings purse, which can be readily carried, either in the pocket or in a small shopping-bag.

The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of a savings purse constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, an elevational view of the same, the outline of the body of the purse being indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 3, a bottom plan view of the closure of the device, the walls of the housing for the slotguards thereof being shown brokenly and in Y section; Fig. 4, a plan view of an oval-form rim, with which the flexible body of the savings purse is connected, and which forms a socket for the detachable closure employed; Fig. 5, a vertical sectional view taken as indicated at line 5 of Fig. 1, the

The iiange 1b and annular seat 1c may be provided by striking downwardly the top wall of the cap, which is first formed in providingthe vertical ange, or wall, l, after which the central portion of the top wall may be cut away, thus leaving the rim provided at its upper edge with an inturned flange having a depressed seat for the closure. lThe depressed portion 1 of the flange is provided with further depressions 1d, which are symmetrically arranged, there being four of these depressions.

The closure 2 preferably comprises an oval-form lock and slot-guard plate 2a and a superposed name-plate 2b, said plates being secured together by means of clenching lugs 4, with which the name-plate 2b is provided at its lateral edges on opposite sides of the transverse center ofthe closure. The plate 2b, which serves as a Vfinishing plate, is of slightly larger dimensions than the plate 2, and the clenching lugs 4L are bent downwardly about the edges ofthe plate 2a and inwardly to bear against the lower surface of the plate 2a. The lugs 4 correspond with the recesses, or depressions, 1d, which are provided in the depressed ange 1c for'their The plate 2 has secured to its lower side a lock-casing 5, from which projects at one end of the closure a key-controlled bolt 6; which is adapted to engage beneath the flange 1c at one end of the rim 1, as shown in Fig. 5. rlhe bolt 6 is springprojected, and may be retracted by means of a suitable key, which works in a key-barrel 6a, which extends through the plates 2a and 2b. At the end of the lower or inner plate 2, which is opposite the lock-equipped end, the plate 2a is provided with a lip, or hook, 7, which is struck downwardly from the plane of the plate 2a, so as to engage beneath the flange 1. In applying the closure, the hook 7 is engaged beneath the flange at one end of the rim, while the bolt 6 is retracted, and when the closure is in position, the bolt 6 is projected by the spring with which the lock is provided.

y tical movement. This coin-slot extends also through the upper wall of a slot-guard housing 9, in which are mounted spring-held, pivoted slot-guards 10. The housing 9 is provided with depending lateral flanges 9a, which converge downwardly, thus providing a passage 9b through which the coin is discharged into the purse, after passing the slot-guards 10. The top wall of the housing 9 is secured to the plate Q by clencliing lugs 11, which are struck downwardly from the end-portions of the slot 8 of the plate 2a.

At the angles where the flanges 9a form a junction with the top wall of the housing 9, the metal is incised and struck inwardly, so as to afford pivot-supports 12, which are adapted to accommodate the pivot-lugs 13, with which the slot-guards 10 are equipped. The slot-guards 10 are provided back of their pivots with short projections 10a, which work freely in slots with which the angular portions of the housing 9 are provided. The slot-guards 10 are held normally against the top wall of the housing 9 by means of wire springs l-l, which are provided at intermediate points with bends 1411, which are adapted to bear against the lower surfaces of the slot-guards 10. yThe springs la are in edect pivoted in the bearings 13 which accommodate the pivots of the slot-guards. At their extremities, the springs are provided with arms lll", which are secured by the clenching lugs 9, with which the upper wall of the housing 9 is provided at its ends. This willV be understood from Figs. 3 and 7.

The closure :Z is further provided with a vertical bill opening 15.

The purse-body 3 may be of any suitable flexible material. Preferably the body comprises amesh-bag, or wire fabric, as indicated in part in Fig. 2, said mesh-bag being secuiedby a wire-lacing to the perforate lower edge-portion of the vertical wall 1a of the rim- 1.

1t will be noted that the lock, the slotguards and the slot-guard housing areall contained within the space encircled by the vertical wall 1a; and it may be remarked that the mesh-bag, or llexible body,x3, is capable of collapsing, so as to be contained within the same space. This makes it very convenient to carry the savings purse in the pocket, or in a small shopping bag, after the savings purse has been taken to the banking institution and a deposit of its contents effected.

In the use of the device, the coins are entered through the coin-slot'S, depressing thek orinally horizontal slot-guards 10. "When the savings purse is brought to the banking institution, the cashier, or teller, as the case may be, employs a key to retract the bolt 6 and lift the closure 2 from its socket. The money may then be emptied from the purse, and the closure reapplied.

The device described is simple, may be manufactured at moderate cost, and presents an eXceeding'ly pleasing appearance. Tt may be carried with ease in the pocket even when filled, because of the capability of the flexible body adjusting itself to conform to the pocket; and after` the errand to the bank has been made, the savings purse may be stowed within a very small compass, either in the pocket or in a shopping bag. The purse-body is preferably formed of freely connected small metal rings, and is not only flexible, but is also self-collapsing; that is, the small rines or elements composing the purse-body will move or shift with relation to each other with the utmost freedom, and thus the collapsible walls of the purse -body are without any stillness, riOidity, or resiliencccf fleXure, so that the mesh fabric will collapse or fall within the top composed of the rim 1 and closure 2.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.

TWhat 1 regard as new7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A Vsavings-purse comprising a rim having its upper portion kprovided with an iii-V wardly-projecting depressed seat, a exible purse-body connected with theflower edgeportion of said rim, and a closure mounted in said seat and equipped` at one end with a lug adapted to engage beneath said seat and equipped at theV other end with Da keyretracted bolt, Vsaid closure having a coinslot therethrough, and slot-guards disposed beneath said closure and carried thereby.

2. A. savings-purse, comprising a rim having a vertical wall provided at its upper portion with an inturned flange having a depressed closure-seat, a key-controlled closure mounted in said seat and provided with a coin-slot and equipped with a slotguard, and a self-collapsing purse-body depending from said rim; y

3. A savings-purse, comprising a rim af fording an annular vertical wall, a closureplate affording a top-wall supported by said rim, said. closure-plate being provided with a coin-slotand equipped at its lower side with a key-controlled lock engaging said und.

4. A savings-purse comprising a rim affording a vertical wall and having its upper portion provided with a depressed inwardly projecting closure-seat, a collapsible pursebody depending from the lower edge-portion of said rim, and a closure comprising an inner plate equipped with a lock provided with a key-controlled bolt and equipped also with a slot-guard housing and slot-guards mounted therein and an outer plate provided at its edges with clenching lugs engaging the marginal portions oi said first-named plate, said closure provided with a coin-slot leading to the interior of said housing.

5. A savings-purse comprising an ovalform rim affording a vertical wall and provided at its upper portion with an inwardly projecting depressed flange affording al closure-seat, a collapsible purse-body connected with the lower edge portion of said rim, and a closure mounted in said seat, comprising an inner plate having at one end a flangeengaging projection and equipped at the opposite end with a lock having a key-controlled bolt adapted to engage the flange which forms said seat, a housing having a horizontal wall adjacent said plate and depending inwardly converging lateral flanges, said plate and the top wall of said housing having registering coin-slots and said plate having clenehing lugs at the ends of the slot thereof engaging the top wall of said housing, slot-guards mounted in said housing, and a huish-plate surmounting said firstnamed plate and secured thereto, said nishplate having a coin-slot registering with said first-named slots.

6. A savings-purse comprising an ovaliorm rim affording a vertical wall and having its upper portion provided with a depressed inwardly projecting lange atl'ording a closure-seat, said flange provided with symmetrically placed depressions, a collapsible purse-body depending from the lower portion of said rim, and a closure mounted in said seat and comprising a lower plate equipped with a slot-guard device and with a lock, said lock having a key-controlled bolt projecting from one end of the closure and engaging said flange and said plate having at the opposite end a projection engaging said flange, and a finish-plate surmounting said first-named plate and equipped at its edges with symmetrically placed clenching lugs which embrace the edges of said firstnamed plate and are clenched beneath said first-named plate, said clenching lugs being accommodated by the depressions in said flange and said plates being provided with a coin-slot.

7. A savings purse comprising a rim, a purse-body depending therefrom and comprising a mesh-bag fabric attached to said rim, a closure-plate affording a top wall supported by said rim, said closureplate being providedwith a coin-slot and equipped at its lower side with a key-controlled lock engaging said rim, and a slotguard device depending from said closureplate and guarding said coin-slot.
