O. J. BALDWIN.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING AND OPERATING THE JAWS 0R ENDS 'OF THE REINS OF A TEMPEE SCREW.
No. 476,721. Patented June '7, 1892.
NITED STATES OZRO J. BALD'WIN, OF YOUNGSVILLE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO \VILLIAM A. LOUDEN AND GEORGE \V. LOUDEN, OF ALLEGHENY,- PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING AND OPERATING THE JAWS R E NDS OF THE REiNS OF A TEMPER-SCREW.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 476,721, dated June 7, 1892. Application filed March 12, 1892. Serial No, 424,864. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern: top of the lever A it will be readily seen that Be itknown that I, OZRO J. BALDWIN,acltithe weight of said ball will always cause the zen of the United States, residing at Youngsratchet to become rigidly engaged at each step ville, in the county of Warren and State of in the process of operation, thereby prevent- 5 Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and ing the same from slipping. The purpose of useful Improvementsin a Device for Holding the cam or eccentric a is to regulate the deand Operating the Jaws or the Ends of the gree of pressure upon the end of the jaws of Reins of a Temper-Screw; andI do hereby (16- the temper-screw, whereby the same are rigclare the following to be a full, clear, and exidly held in their normal position. It will 10 act description of the invention, such as will readily be observed in Fig. 2 that'there is 10- enable others skilled in the art to which it apcated in the orifice a in said lever apadding,
pertains to make and use the same. or, more properly speaking, a piece of elastic My invention relates to a device or mechblock E, the function of which is to impart anism for operating and holding in their norelasticity to the lever when in operation.
15 mal position the lower end or jaws of the reins 0 represents the collar or yoke of my deof a temper-screw, which is now universally vice, which fits around the end or jaws of the used in drilling or boring oil or gas wells; and reins G of the temper-screw F. This collar is its object is to provide a device which is very constructed so as to be adapted to fit over the simplcin construction, effective, andpractical end of said reins and is provided with two 20 in operation, thereby enabling the operator to jaws c, which are circular in construction and perform almost instantaneously what under have the notches 0 upon the outer edges of the presentmeansnow employed for such purthe same. In each of said jaws there is an poses would require at least four times as orifice c,in which is locatedthe journal-boltB. long. I attain this object by a certain con- These notches engage the end of the pawl D. 25 struction, combination, and arrangement of The pawl D is provided upon its under side parts fully described in this specification, and with a slot (1, which is adapted to fit over the illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in lug 0. which has an orifice a upon the top of which the lever A. In the sides of this pawl (the Figure l is a side view of my invention atlower edges of which are circular) adjacent 3o tached to the temper-screw and in a position the slot (Z there are two holes cl, through which for use. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in secis placed the pivot or screw bolt (Z which fastion, of the lever which is located in the jaws tens said pawl to the lever A. One end (Z of of the collar or yoke of my device. Fig. 3 is this pawl is made to engage the notches c a detailed perspective view of said yoke or upon the jaws of the collar 0. Upon the lower 3 5 collar. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the pawl or side of the other end of this pawl there is proratchet. vided a spring (i which extends forward and Referring to the drawings, the letter A desdown and rests upon the back of the lever A. ignates the lever employed in the operation This spring holds said pawl in its normal poof my invention, which is constructed with a sition. 40 solid round ball aupon one end and an eccen- The operation of my invention is as follows: tric or cam a upon the other. This lever has When the temperscrew is run out and the bearings c in the jaws c of the yoke or collar driller wishes to elevate the same to the top O and is mounted upon a journal-bolt B, of the reins of the temper-screw before runwhich is located in the orifice a in the throat ning another bit, he will simply take hold of 5 5 of the aforesaid cam or eccentric. Said jourthe ball upon the end of the lever A and push k nal-bolt has bearings c in the jaws c of the said ball or lever to the point indicated by yoke O. The ball a performs a twofold funcdotted lines in Fig. 1. When this is done, the tion: first, it answers the purpose of a desirend or jaws of the tempenscrew will open able grip for the hand in operating my invensufficiently far to enable him to raise the I00 50 tion; second, it acts as a weight, and as the temper-screw to the desired point, or rather ratchet D is pivoted upon the lug 0, upon the to the top of the reins, This being done, he
again takes hold of said ball and pulls the same down, as illustrated in Fig. 1, which closes the end or jaws of the temperscrew tightly around the screw when the ratchet or pawl engages the notches in the end of the collar, thereby rigidly and securely holding the same in their normal position, and the driller is again ready for operation.
As it is apparent that my invention is capable of various modifications, I do not wish to limit myself to any specific construction, and as I have thoroughly tested the same and know by experience that myinvention is very useful and practical in operation I deem it useless to further enlarge upon its merits.
It is well that I should mention the fact that the mode now commonly used for operating and holding the temperscrew consists simply of a hand or thumb screw which is very ineffective and tedious in operation.
What I claim is 1. In a device for operating and holding the jaws or the ends of the reins of a temperscrew, the combination of a leverhaving upon one end a solid ball and upon the other end a cam or eccentric, said lever being mounted upon a journal-bolt having bearing 0 in the jaws of a yoke, the yoke fitting around the end or jaws of the reins of the temper-screw and provided with two jaws having the notches 0 in which is located the aforesaid lever, the journal-bolt upon which said lever is mounted, and the pawl or ratchet located and mounted upon the lug a of said lever, all substantially as described, and for the purl pose set forth.
2. The combination of the leverA with the ends of the reins of a temper-screw, said lever being mounted upon a journal-bolt having bearings c in the ends of a yoke C, the yoke 0, located upon the end or the jaws of the reins of the temper-screw and provided with OZRO J. BALDWIN. Witnesses:
