Be it known that 1, ANDREW B. HENDRYX, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Fishing-Reels; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute a part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in fishing-reels, the object being to produce a simple, light, strong, and durable reel particularly adapted by its open construction to permit the rapid drying of the line.

XVith these ends in view my invention consists in the construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.

The spool of my improved reel is composed in part of two flat rings A A, which may be constructed in any suitable manner-as, for instance, by striking them out of sheet metal or by bending them out of metal of suitable width and lapping their ends. In size they are virtually as large as the diameter of the spool. A circular series of body-wires are applied to these rings, each of thesaid wires comprising a wide open loop 13 and two spoke ends 13' B, the inner extremities whereof are bent outwardly at a right angle to form a retaining-point Z), the loops being located between the rings, which, as herein shown, are provided with equidistant peripheral notches a, which receive the body-wires at their bends for holding the said wires in place; but they may be secured in place by pinching them Serial No. 424,794. upon the rings or by soldering or otherwise at caching them thereto. As thus employed the rings bind the body-wires together and stiffen the spool. The inner portions of the said spoke ends are attached to hubs,each of which is composed of a grooved member 0 and a notched member D, the former containing radial grooves 0, arranged to receive the inner portions of the spoke ends, and the latter containing similarly-arranged notches (Z, which receive the retaining-points b, formed at the extremities of the spoke ends, as before described. It will be clear that when the two members of each hub are fitted together, as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings, the spoke ends will be held against lateral displacement by the said grooves and against longitudinal displacement by said notches. If desired, the said notches might be replaced by similarlyarranged perforations; but the notches are of more convenient formation. The said hubs thus composed are mounted upon a spindle E and interposed between shoulders e, formed at the ends thereof, and the frame of the device. If desired, the notched member of one of the hubs may be serrated, as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings, to form a ratchet-wheel,

which, in such case, would be engaged by a clip d, all as shown by Fig. t of the drawings. One end of the spindle is provided with a handle F of ordinary construction.

The frame of the device is made, as herein shown, of two corresponding stirrup-shaped pieces G G of heavy wire, separated at their outer ends and secured by staples g g to the base-plate H. The inner extremities of the said pieces of wire are riveted together in contact by rivets g, as shown by Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. Just within the said extremities the wires are correspondingly bowed outwardly, as at g to cooperate in forming bearings for the spindle.

I am aware that a fishing-reel having bodywires each bent to form a loop and two spoke ends is old. I am also aware that areel having its hub made with a radially-grooved disk to receive the inner ends of the spool-spokes is old. I do not therefore claim either of those constructions broadly.

Although my improved spool and frame are well adapted to be used together, it is apparcut that the frame may receive a different kind of spool and that the spool may be inserted into a different form of frame. In view of which and other variations already suggested I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described,but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

vHaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a fishing-reel, the combination, with the spool and base-plate thereof, of a frame com posed of two corresponding stirrupshaped pieces of wire respectively attached to the said plate, having their extremities fastened together and bowed outwardly near their extremities to form a bearing for the spool, substantially as described.

2. In a fishing-reel, the combination, with the base-plate and frame thereof, of a spool composed of a spindle, two rings virtually corresponding in size to the diameter of the spool, a series of body-wires, each bent to form a loop, and two spoke ends applied to the said rings between which their loops are located, and hubs mounted on the spindle and receiving the spoke ends of the wires, substantially as described, and whereby the said rings bind the body-wires together and stiffen the spool.

In a fishing-reel, the combination, with the base-plate thereof, of a frame composed of two corresponding stirrup-shaped pieces of wire respectively attached to the said plate, having their extremities attached together and bowed outwardly near their extremities to form a bearing for the spool, and a spool composed of a spindle, two rings, a series of body-wires, each bent to form a wide open loop, and two spoke ends applied to the said rings between which their loops are located, and two hubs mounted on the spindle near the ends thereof and each composed of a radially-slotted and a notched disk receiving the spoke ends of the body-wires between them, substantially as described.
