LINE-GUIDE FOR FISHING-RODS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,420, dated February 22, 1887.

Application filed August 21, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES WRIGHT, acitiport, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Line-Guides for Fishing-Rods, of which the following is a specification.

The invention has forits object to provide a novel and efficient line-guide for fishingro'ds', whereby the guide-eyeis sustained and braced by divergent side arms having simple means for securing them upon the rod, all in such manner that the guide-eye is guarded by said arms and the main body of the fishing-line that is cast into the water is prevented from catching in the guide-eyes on the rod when such main body is cast, an objection to which ordinary line-guides are subject.

The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, iri'which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the line-guide applied to a fishing-rod; Fig. 2, aplan view, on an enlarged scale, showing the blank from which the lineguide is constructed, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the line-guide made from such blank.

In carrying my invention into effect I stamp or cut the blank from sheet-brass or any other suitable metal, with a body portion, 1, having its opposite edges cut away to form offsets or shoulders 2, the extremities of the body portion being provided with cross-heads 8. The blank so formed is bent around at its center into an eye, 4, with the side arms, 5, diverging from the eye, and their cross-heads 3arranged parallelto each other. The offsets or shoulders 2 bear, respectively, against opposite sides of the eye so formed, thereby retaining the side arms in their divergent position and prevent ing the eye from collapsing. The blank is so bent that the eye proper is located between the side arms and is, therefore, not liable to be bent or disarranged if accidentally struck against some object.

' the cross-heads extend in the direction of the length of the rod, and the guideis secured by winding thread or other strands around the cross heads and the rod, and properly tying the thread. When the guide is thus secured, the eye will be sustained and braced through the medium of the divergent side arms, while the cross-heads on the arms afford simple means for tying or otherwise securing the device to the rod. It will be obvious that in line guides constructed in this manner the guideeyes are guarded by the said side arms, and, therefore, when the fishingline is castinto the water it will not catch around the guide-eye, as the side arms will cause it to readily slide off. In ordinarylineguides the eye is exposed or unguarded above the rod, and as the wet line is cast it frequently becomes entangled with the eyes, which is a source of much annoyance and an objectionable feature entirely avoided by my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. Aline-guide for fishing-rods, consisting of the eye and the divergent side arms provided at their-lower extremities with heads for securing the arms to the rod, substantially as described.

2. A line guide for fishingrods, consisting of the eye and the divergent side arms having cross-heads at their extremities, said eye being located between the side arms, substantially as described.

3. A line-guide for fishing-rods, consisting of the piece of metal having offsets or shoulders at its opposite edges, and provided at each end with a cross head, said piece of metal being bent around to form the guideeye,

and the divergent-side arms with the offsets or shoulders bearing against opposite sides of the eye, substantially as described.
