SSPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,257, dated June '7, 1892. Application filed March 9, 1891- Serial No. 334,385- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN J. FINMAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopkins, in the county of I-Iennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Siding-Holders, of

. which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to produce a convenient device fortemporarily supporting siding-boards in the operation of Weatherboarding buiclings. This object is accomplished in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Whicl Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 shows its operative position in connecnection with siding-boards.

The main portion of the device consists of a thin and comparatively long strip 1 of sheet metal, thatmay be curved about, as shown in Fig. 2, and have suflicient resiliency to cause it to resume such curved position after being bent laterally. For convenience in use and to avoid having ends that might be in the way the lower end 2 may be bent around, as shown, and the upper end 3 also bent outwardly to a suitable extent. At the under side of the plate, near its lower end, are tongues 4 for engaging the siding or other object to support the device and prevent it from slipping down while supporting a piece of siding 5 above. At the under side of the plate is also provided a loose angular sheet-metal piece 6, that is attached to the plate 1 by means of a thumb-screw 7, which is adapted to slide for adjustment in a longitudinal slot 8 in the plate. Near the upper end of the plate is a screw 9, having a flat end 10, by means of which it can be readily screwed in or out of the plate to adjust the length of the projecting portion. The adj ustability of the angular piece 6 is to regulate the overlapping of the siding-boards to the extent desired.

In use, as will be apparent from inspection of Fig. 3, the upwardly-projecting pointed end of the piece 6 is inserted under the lastplaced siding-board and the tongues 4 are made to penetrate the next lower board, and the screw 9 is then in position to support the board that is to be next attached. By the use of such device the Work of arranging and supporting the siding-boards in proper relative position is greatly lessened.

Having described my invention, What I claim is A siding-holder consisting of a plate of spring metal having its end portions bentin- Ward and an-intermediate portion bent outward, an adjustable support for a sidingboard on its upper portion and on its lower portion engaging tongues, and intermediate the ends a device consisting of an angular metal piece provided with athumb-screw operating in a slot in said plate for regulating the lap, whereby the siding-holder is held in place and a siding-board supported thereon is held in proper position against the Wall to which it is to be secured, substantially asset forth.
