COLORING OR MOISTENING DEVICE FOR PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,204, dated May 31, 1892.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST HOUSMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Coloring or Moistening Device for Paper, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a device for the coloring, staining, or moistening of paper or other material, so that the How of color or moistening-liquid may be regulated with nicety in accordance with the speed at which the paper or other material is fed or caused to travel under or past the coloring or moistening device.
M yinvention has more particular reference to a device designed for applying liquid colors to paper, either in solid or body colors or in stripes; but it should be understood that my invention may be applied to devices for coloring or staining textile or other suitable materials or for moistening purposes.
In the accompanyingdrawings I have shown my invention as applied to a box adapted for use on a machine for striping paper, and accordingly the box is in proportion to its height shown as somewhat narrow; butit should be understood that the box will vary in width and size generally, according to the work which it is intended to perform.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of such box constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
This box consists of a reservoir R for the color or other liquid which is to be used and preferably closed at the top by a suitable stopper 3. At its lower end this reservoir has a discharge-spout S, which has its outlets,
preferably, on its upper side and in the form of slots or perforations 19. These slots or perforations p are preferably arranged in rows, the rows of openings being of varying size. In connection with these outlet-openings p I provide an adjustable stop-valve P, which can be adjusted to cover and close all the outletopenings or as many of the rows as may be desired, according to the speed at which the liquid is to be allowed to escape from the reservoir onto the distributor B, which may be a brush or felt or other suitable fabric.
To obtain this adjustment of the valve P, it is carried by a screw-stem a, turning in a slide N and having a thumb-nut or head 01.,
by turning which the valveP may be pressed onto or raised from the outlet-openings in the spout, as may be desired. This slide N is adjustable longitudinally in the spout in guides 0%, running parallel with the spout. By freeing this valve P from the spout on turning the head of the screw the slide N can be adjusted in its guides longitudinally of the spout to bring the valve over more or fewer rows of outlet-openings, and the valve can then be closed over those openings by turningthescrew down again. The distributing brush or felt B termined by the position of the valve P, and
this adjustment of the valve is determined by the speed at which the paper or other material is caused to travel under the distributing brush or felt B, as will be readily understood.
I claim as my invention- 1. A moistening or color-distributing having a discharge-spout with outlet-openin gs on its upper side, a valve to close more or fewer of the openings, and a distributer below the discharge-spout.
2. A moistening or color-distributing box havingadischarge-spoutwithoutlet-openings, a valve to regulate the discharge, and a pocket carried by the under side of the spout to receive and retain the distributer, substantially as described.
3. A moistening or color-distributing box havingadischarge-spout withoutlet-openin gs, a valve to close more or fewer of the latter, and an adjustable slide carrying the valve, with a distributer below the said spout, all substantially as described.
