Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN A. HANsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specication.

My invention relates to brushes and more specifically to that class thereof wherein a inoistener is provided for moistening the bristles of the brush in order to prevent the dust being thrown into the atmosphere during the use of the brush such as is the case with brushes not equipped with moistening means.

The object of my invention is the production of a brush of the character mentioned which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in use.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- 1Figure 1 is a perspective view ofa brush embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on substantially line -m of Fig. 2.

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a rectangular brush back 1 at the under side of which are provided bristles 2 which are secured in the former in the usual manner. A handle 3 is provided which is secured in the back 1 in the usual manner. Mounted upon the upper side of said back 1 is an elongated longitudinally extending liquid tank 4 secured in positionby means of loops 5 which embrace said tank as shown in the several views. Provided at the upper side of said tank intermediate the ends thereof is a filling slug 6 through which access may be gained to the interior of said tank for fillingv or emptying the saine. The ends of tank 4 are closed by removable closure plugs 7 formed preferably of cork. The end portions of said tank at the under sides thereof are provided with elongated longitudinally extending slots 8 which register with correspending slots 9 provided 'in the back 1. Arranged at the under side of the back 1 is a longitudinally extending strip 10 of absorben t material which extends longitudinally of said back and preferably medially of the longitudinal edges thereof. The central portion lof said strip is secured by means of staples or other suitable fastening devices 11 to the under side of said back, the strip depending therefrom to a position between the bristles 2 in the manner illustrated. The respective ends of said strip are passed upwardly through the slots 9 and 8v terminating in the interior ofthe tank as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Said ends are secured in position bv the closure 7, the former being clamped between saidclosures and the bottoms or inner ends of the slots 8.

Vith the arrangement disclosed it will be seen that the liquid contained in the tank el will be absorbed by the ends of the strip` 9 passing downwardly therethrough into the body of the strip whence said liquid will be transferred to the brush bristles which are pressed into contact with said strip through flexing during operation of the brush. lith this arrangement it will be seen that a selffeeding arrangement is provided, the liquid passing automatically from the tank L1 through the ends of the absorbent strip into the body of the latter and thence to the brush bristles. By adjusting the positions of the closures 7 in the ends of the tank the clamping` of the ends of the absorbent strip may be increased or decreased and thus the flow of liquid from the tank through said strip ends regulated, it being clear that if the closures are inov-ed outwardly in order to relax the clamping of said strip ends a greater amount of liquid will be permitted to pass therethrough and, conversely if said closures are pressed inwardly to increase the pressure or clamping of said strip ends the iow of liquid therethrough will be retarded. Thus closures 7 through their frictional engagement with the ends of the tank which renders said closures longitudinally adjustable in said tank, serve the double function of closures for the tank ends and means of regulating the iow of liquid from the tank to the absorbent strip.

At the ends of the brush back 1 are provided elongated pads l2 which serve primarily to prevent marring of any polished or delicate 4 surface with which the brush may be brought in -contact in the use thereof. Said pads 12 also serve to cover the outer ends of slots 9 as shown so as to produce a brush which is of neat and finished appearance.

elongated slots in the ends of said tank registering with slots in said back; a strip of absorbent material interposed between said bristles and having its ends extending up- Wardly and engaging the slots in said back and tank; and removable closures in the ends of said tank serving to secure the ends of said strips in position in said slots and regulate the flow of liquid from said tank, substantially as described.
