UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. F. JONES, OE BRADDOOK, PENNSYLVANIA.
PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,870, dated May 31, 1892.
Application filed September 28, 1891. Serial No. 407,063. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. E. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Braddock, in the county ot Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Willenable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved packing for engines, hydraulic machinery, zc.; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as Will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of my improved packing, which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of a modification of the same.
To construct a packing in accordance with my invention for the use of steam-pistons, hydraulic machinery, dec., I provide a flat strip of leather, rubber, or other suitable substance l, and bend the same in the direction of its length into the form of the letter U. Placed upon this strip l area series of braided or twisted parts of cotton Wick 3, which are arranged Withn the fold of the strip l and partly or wholly surrounding the same. These two parts-the leather l and cotton Wick S-are attached securely together by means of wooden or soft metallic pegs 4, which hold the several portions together, and the Whole surrounded with braided cotton 2 and the entire construction saturated with a suitable lubricant, which renders the packing ready for use.
This packing is made in the form of a continuous rope of any desired length and the thickness or diameter regulated bytheamount of cotton Wick 3 therein before pegging orl braiding` the outside of the same.
At Fig. 2 on the drawings I have shown a slight modification of my improved packing in which the central core 5 is formed of a continuous strip Without bending the same and the cotton Wick pegged in the manner before described.
This packing may be made in continuous lengths and, being pliable, may be cut to suit various diameters, and may be used in cylinders, rods, or plungers by reversing the pegged surface, which cannot be done with any other pegged packing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The herein-described packing, consisting of a suitable core composed of leather, rubber, or other suitable substance, the cotton wick braided or twisted and arranged about the said core, pegs or other means for attaching the said core and Wick together, and the whole surrounded by braided cotton, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 22d day of September, A. D. 1891.
JOHN C. F. JONES.
In presence of- CHARLES LARGE, M. E. HARRISON.
