SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,788, dated May 31, 1892. Application filed October 10, 1891- Scrial No. 408,319. (No model.)

To a whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, IVEBB MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook,and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring and Canvas Cots, of which the following is'a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, illustrating the invention, in which Figure 1 is a perspective representation of my improved spring and canvas cot in position for use. Fig. 2 is a detail removed from the other portions; 3,an enlarged broken end of the free portion of one spring-support and one end of the connecting-brace.

This invention relates to novel means for securing detachably canvas supports to the spring side supports of cots which are provided with stands or base-supports.

The description of the complete cot is as follows: The side supports B to the cot are formed of suitable spring metal, which at the foot of the cot and at each side thereof are coiled substan tiall y once and one-half around, and the lower end of each support is secured to a frame or base E E, which may be held together by rods and nuts F; or the rods may be provided with right and left hand screws to be turned into the Wood portions E, that the frame may be of the knockdown style for shipment or storage; In the drawings hook-boltsJ are employed to secure thelower ends of the supports B to the frame E; but any suitable means for securing them so as to permit them readily to be removed Will serve the purpose. In coiling the supports at B it is preferable that the main portion B lie insideof the said coil to provide asmooth finish at the side of the cot. The coil 13 may, however, have a less vertical area, and thus lie under the main portion B. The canvas H may be of any kind and pattern desired; but it must be sufficiently strong to sustain any probable Weight to be put thereon. Its four edges are provided with strongly secured hems, through which the supports B B and braces A C are put, the braces A C passing through the end hems. To set the cot up after the several parts are formed as shown, secure the supports I3 to the frameE, and then, with the braceC in its lowerhem and the free ends of the same placed on the free ends of the supports B, draw the side hems onto the latter supports to bring the brace C to the point shown, taking care that the eyes of the brace A in the upper hem are placed on the tenons projecting out from the free ends of the supports. The canvas being tightly drawn, the set-screws a a in the margins of the open eyes of the brace C are turned to clamp the brace firmly to the supports B, and the cot will be ready for use. The brace C, by means of its open eyes and set-screws, is adjustable longitudinally on the spring-supports to any point desired, whereby the canvas may have a tension suitable to support with comfort persons of ditfereutweights.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improvement in spring, canvas, and stand cots, consisting of a canvas provided on its four edges with elongated loops in the form of wide hems, in combination with a detachable brace at the free ends of the spring-sup ports and a brace which is provided with open eyes at its ends, said spring-supports inserted, respectively, Within the eyes, the braces respectively inserted within the hems at the ends of the canvas and the spring side supports inserted within the side hems of the canvas, and the brace C, secured to said supports by set-screws, as specified and shown.
