. Tomlzwitomz'amwy concern.
Be it known that I; 'JosEP' W. Wars: MANTEL, a citizen of, the United States, residin at Newark, in the county of Essex and tate of New Jersey, have invented cer-- tain new and useful Improvements in Coin-' bination Bed Attachments; and I do here- I by declare the followin to be a full, clear,
, and exact description the invention, such as will enable bthers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tocharacte-rs of reference marked thereon, which form apartof this specification. I r
This invention relates, generally, to improvements inw that class of devices known '50 "the character hereinafter more fully de- ,in the art as combination bed-attachments;
and, the present invention has reference.
more particularly, to anovel and useful at-" tachment for beds which is adapted foruse asa head or back-restfa pillow-sham holder,
atable, or a means for preventing drafts of air from blowing upon the person lying in "25' the bed.
The present invention has for its principal objectto provide" an attachment obthe general character hereinafter fully set forth,
which is easilyapplied in various positions Specification of Iiettersiatent. p i i S h21, 1 epplication filed m 10, 1919. Serial No. 309,903.
br the saidparts', 511 sf which twin .be mor e particularly set forth in the following specification, and then finally embodied; in the I showing also in perspective the combination I bodying the principles of the present invent .tion, said view illustrating in connection therewith the varioususes for which the attachment 'is adapted; and Fig.2 is'ape r spective view showing in detail a portion of one of the side-rails'of the bedstead, a pair' of slides movably and detachably' connected with said rail, a fragmentary portion of Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing in detail a portion of a foldable head-.restfor use with the attachment. 1 I
bed-att ac hmentmadeaccording to and em-' 15 7 :one of the posts forming part of the attach- "ment, and a connecting brace or stay-rod between said post and one of said slides.
. Similar characters 'of reference are ployed in the. said abbve described indicate correspondin parts.
Referring now to lg, Iof the drawings,-
upon the frame of the bed, and is adjustable the reference-characters l and 2- indicate views, to
into different positions, so as to be usedfor the respective, end-frames of a hedstead, and a desired angle, but which is alsoada'pted for which are of any suitable construction, and
use asa pillow-sham holder; or, when slid '-are suitably connected in any usual manner into and fastened in other po sitions with to the respective corner-posts 5 of the sald I relation to the bed, may be used as a servend-frames. The said side rails, as will be to provide an,attachment which may'also' be section, \and, movablyf Ed d 7 o "s es, as-6 an V.

Extending verti- A in detailed description. of the same.
ith the various objects ofthe'inventibn '6 are posts,'as 10, each *post beingpro-vided the-novel device, attachment or apparatus of posed upo'n the and secured in its. fixedin view, the invention consists, primarilygm with a sleeve 11, which may be movably discally and suitably connected with said slidesscribed and for'the purposes herein-above stated and, the inventionconsists, further position thereon by means ofa set-screw 12, ,or other suitably formed 1 fastening means.
the support of the head or shoulders, at any L 3 and 4 the two side-rails of the same I Connecting the" respective sleeves 11 of the rod'13, as shown in-Fig. 1 of the drawings.
- more, in the novel arrangements and comoppositely disposed posts10' may. be a tiebinations'of the several devices and parts,, I as well asin the details oftheconstruction Other sleeves 14ers also movably disposed formed frames,
upon 'said posts 10, said sleeves being adapted to be secured in their adjusted positions upon said posts by means of set-screws 15, or other suitable fastening means. Pivotally connected with said sleeves 14, for any desired angular adjustment, is a suitably as 16, in which is suitably mounted and ecured a piece of fabric 17 as canvas or the like. In order that the said posts 10 may be rigidly held in their vertically disposed positions, braces or struts, as 18, may be employed, the same being suitably secured tothe respective slides 7 by means of screws or pins 20. substantially as illustrated more particularly in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
As shown, the said frame 16 usually comprises a pair of metal end-members 21 and connecting side-members 22, to which the fabric 17 is suitably secured by means of rivets 23. This frame may, however, be otherwise constructed, and if desired, the said side-members 22 may be entirely When a foldable frame is desired. as shown inFig. 8 of the drawings, in lieu of i single end-members, 21, end-members 24 and 25 which are pivotally connected as. at 26,
may be-employed, whereby the sections of. the head-rest thus provided may be folded upon each other. or held in their straightened out relation, substantially-as shown and as will be clearly evident from an inspection of said Fig. 3.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, when the attachment is secured in the position,.indicated generally by the character A, then the device is capable for use,; either as a rest for the head or shoulder, or as a pillowsham holder, but when moved into the dotted position, indicated bythe character B,
' and the frame 16 is properly adjusted, then the device canbeused as a serving or readng table, .or' may be used as a" work-bench, 1f desired,v and as will be clearly evident.
To .use the device or attachment as a .draftkpreventing'means, it is detached from" [the respectiveside-rafls 3 and at, and readily/secured upon either one of said side-rails,
in aposition indicated .in'the dotted outline,
atC, the person lying in bed thus being protected from winds or drafts entering an open window or door in close proximity to the bed, as will be readily evident from an Lto other ,uses in connection with the bed,
and by sllghtlyvarying the slides and fasinspection -of said Fig. 1 of the drawings, The ,devlce or attachment may also-be put set forthabove I have hereunto 'set In tening means may be used in connection with the side-rails of a bedstead of a different style and construction from that shown in the-accompanying drawings.
I am fully aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as the details of the'construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended thereto. Hence, I do'not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of. the various derails, means for securing said slides in fined positions to said rails, upright posts extending from sa1d slides, sleeves movably mounted upon sa1d posts, means for securing sa1d sleeves in their adjusted positions upon said posts, a covered frame connected with and -pivotally mounted between said sleeves, a
second set of slides'mounted upon saidrails, means for securing said. last mentioned slides tosaid rails, and stay-rods between said-posts and said last-mentioned slides.
2. In '"a bed-attachment of the character set forth, in combination with the siderails of a bedstead, slides mounted upon-said rails, means for securing said slides in fixed position to said rails, upright posts extending from said slides, sleeves mov'ably mounted upon said posts, means for securing said sleeves in their adjusted positions upon said posts, a covered frame connectedwith and' pivotally mounted betweensaid sleeves, a second set of slides mounted upon said rails, means 'for securing said last-mentioned slides to said rails, stay-rods between said posts and said last mentioned slides and a tie-rod connecting said posts.
' In testimony, that I claim the invention y hand this 5th day of July, 1919.
