BUSHING -AND VENTING APPARATUS FOR BARRELS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. DERHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bushing andVentingApparatus for Barrels, Casks, and the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention has for its object the production of a simple and novel apparatus for barrels, to enable as much of their contents as desired to be run off at the bung-hole without the gurgling and splashing that occur when this method is employed Without any venting means. Its novelty Will be hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section of a barrel, showing the application of my apparatus. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section in elevation of the bushing and vent-tube. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the dotted line x as of Fig. 2.
The same letters of reference are used to indicate identical parts in all the figures.
Heretofore in rectifying-houses and other places where it is desirable from time to time to partially draw off part of the contents of the barrels it has been customary to roll them on their sides and pour off through the bunghole as much as desired; but this method has been found to be troublesome and accompanied by considerable Waste when the barrel is more than half full, owing to the lack of a vent and the passage of the air and liquid in opposite directions through the bung-hole, thereby occasioning the familiar gurgling and splashing.
To overcome this defect I provide a tapering metal bushing A, serrated or roughened for about half of its length and provided on its inner side with two perforated guide-lugs a. A curved vent-tube B has one end inserted into the smaller end of the bushing and through the perforations in the lugs a, where it is clamped in place by a thumb-screw 1), extending through a tapped boss 0 on the bushing.
In using the apparatus the vent-tube and bushing are inserted into the bung-hole of the barrel 0, Fig. 1, with the bung-hole uppermost, and the bushing is driven in with a mallet, the serrations serving to hold it tight. Upon then rolling the barrel over to the position shown in Fig. 1 the contents will flow out smoothly through the bushing and air will be supplied to the interior of the barrel through the vent-tube B. After drawing off as much of the contents of the barrel as is desired the latter is rolled back, with the bung-hole and bushing uppermost, and a bung can be inserted into the bushing or the bushing and vent-tube may be removed .and applied in a similar manner to another barrel.
By making the vent-tube detachable from the bushing one may be removed and another of different length substituted to accommodate barrels of varying sizes.
I am aware that it is old to apply curved vent-tubes to faucets, and I do not claim, broadly, the application of a vent-tube in drawing otf the contents of a barrel or cask; but,
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim The herein-described bushing and venting apparatus, consisting of the tapering bushing A, having the perforated lugs a on its interior, and the adjustable curved vent-tube B, inserted through the lugs a and clamped by the screw 1?, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
