No. 475,739. Patented May 24, 1892."

MILTON L. DUDLEY, or DES MOINES, IOWA.
FASTENER FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,739, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed October 25, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MILTON L. DUDLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Sash-Support and \Vindow-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the construction of a hinged device one portion of which is adapted to be fixed on the top of the lower sash of a window and the other portion thereof provided with an adhesive substance adapted to engage the face of one of the side rails of the upper sash of said window to hold the two sashes in any desired position relative to each other, as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top View; Fig. 2, a bottom view; an d Fi 3, a transverse sectional view through the line was of Fig. l,which views, jointly considered, show the device adapted to be applied; and Fig. 4 shows it applied to two sliding sashes as required for practical use.
Referring to the drawings, A represents that portion of the device which is to be attached to the lower sash and is provided with screw-seats to admit screws. An arched casing B is formed integral with the portion A and projects from the outer face thereof. A center pin 0 is mounted on the under side of the casing B and is surrounded by two coiledwire springs D, one end of each of which springs extends through perforations in the casing and the other end thereof is fixed to a hanger H, hereinafter described.
The second portion of my device consists of a fiat plate F, hinged to the portion A by means of ears and pivoted in a common way. This plate F has a lug F formed integral therewith and proj ecting downward therefrom near the outer edge of said plate. Screwseats are formed in the plate F between the lug F and the outer edge of the plate to admit screws to hold the section of india-rubber side of said plate and the lug F F represents alu g formed integral with and projecting upward and outward from the outer edge of the plate F. This lug is adapted in size and shape to be used as a finger-hold Serial No. 369,379. (No model.)
for adjusting the hinged section relative to the sashes, as required to fasten the sashes together and to unfasten them at pleasure.
H represents a hanger, which is suspended by its hooked portion on a fixed rod H which latter is supported in a horizontal position on brackets H which latter, together with the rod H are formed integral with the plate F. This hanger II has an elongated slot in its depending portion, adapted to admit the projecting ends of the wire springs therein, as heretofore mentioned. The portion A is fixed on the top rail of the lower sash, so that the section of rubber fixed to the plate J will impinge against one of the side rails of the upper sash and across it when turned against it by means of the lug F in such a manner that the two sashes will be united by means of the stop device and prevented from sliding relative to each other. It is therefore obvious that the lower sash can be elevatedand retained at any point of elevation desired, the upper sash lowered and retained at any point desired, and when the two sashes are in position as required to close the window they can be readily locked together by means of the stop device, so that a person on the outside cannot raise or lower either sash to open the window.
I am aware that devices have been applied to the horizontal meeting-rails of windowsashes to lock the two sashes together when the window-sash was closed; but in no instance has a sash-holdin g and sash-locking device been formed and applied in such a. manner that it would fasten the sashes together at any point of elevation relative to each other, so that the top sash could be lowered and.the top sash elevated and retained in such positions for the purpose of ventilating a room and also locked together when closed, so that the window could not be opened by persons on the outside.
I claim as my invention 1. A sash-support and window-lock composed of the plate A, adapted to be fastened on the flat top surface and end portion of the lower sash of a window, a spring -actuated plate F, hinged to the plate A and provided with integral lugs F and F an elastic cushion 10 hold adapted for manipulating the hinged plate relative to another movable sash and also provided with a cushion adapted to en gage the vertical face of a sash, in combination with two vertically-sliding sashes in a Window, to operate in the manner set forth, I5
for the purposes stated.
