Be it known that I, GEORGE S. JEPHSON, a. citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and 5, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in that class of devices which are adapted to be attached to windows, and are for the purposes of providing a combined safety-lock and ventilating means; and, the invention relates, more particularly, to a novel and simple attachment in the form of a combined safety-lock and ventilating device which is adapted to be secured to and cooperates with the windowsaslies, to permit either or both of the window-sashes to be respectively raised and lowered to their full extent, or to permit of a limited movement, only, of either or both window sashes for ventilating purposes, and to lock the window sashes, in that case, against any further movement, so that it will be impossible for a person to enter from the outside of the window, or to manipulate the safety-attachment from the outside in the endeavor to raise or lower the windowsashes a distance suflicient to permit any entrance into the room through the window.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide a novel, simple, and cheaply constructed, as well as an efliciently operating attachment for the purposes hereinabove stated, the device comprising but a very few parts, and being adapted to be easily and quickly attached in its proper position with relation to the window-sashes, whereby either window-sash may be lowered or raised to a limited degree, either at the top or bottom, or at both ends of the window, simultaneously, for ventilation.
The invention has for its further object to provide a window-attachment of the general character hereinafter more particularly set forth, the attachment comprising a slotted body-plate or element adapted to be attached to one of the window-sashes, and a stop-arm removably connected with said body-plate and cooperatin with said plate and thepther window-sas for permitting the. limited movements of the windowsashes, but the stop-arm being adapted to be removed from the said body-plate, whereby the window-sashes can be raised or lowered to their full extent.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention. With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the combined safety-lock and ventilating attachment for windows more fully set forth in the following detailed description of the same.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an inner face view of a window-frame and its window-sashes, shown in their closed positions in the frame, and provided with the combined safety-lock and ventilating attachment; and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the window frame and the safety-lock and ventilating attachment, both window-sashes being shown in their respectively raised and lowered positions, limited by the safety-lock and ventilating attachment. Fig. 3 is a detailed front view of a portion of a window-frame and portions of its two movable window-sashes, showing in connection therewith in front elevation, and on an enlarged scale, the safety-lock and ventilating attachment embodying the principles of the present invention; and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section, said section being taken on line 4-4 in Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow m. Fig. 5 is a similar sectional representation of the parts shown in said Fig. 4, except the lower window-sash which is omitted from said View, illustrating the manner of removing the stop-arm from the slotted body-plate of the safety-lock and ventilating attachment, and Fig. 6 is a detail horizontal section of the upper windowsash, and of the said body-plate and the stop-arm of the safety-lock and ventilating attachment.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character l indicates any usual construction of windowframe, in which are movably disposed in the usual manner the upper window-sash 2 and the lower window-sash 3.
Suitabl attached to one of the side-pleces, as 4, of the up er window-sash 2, and at a point near the ower portion of the windowsash is the body-plate 5 of thecombined safety-lock and ventilating attachment, the said body-plate 5 being suitably secured 1n place upon the face of the said side-piece 4 by means of screws 6, or other suitable fastening means, and being located directly over a recess,-as 7 with which the said sidepiece 4 is provided. The said body-plate 5 is also made with a vertical guide-portion in the form of a longitudinally extending opening or slot 8, locateddirectly above and es-' tablishing communication with the said recess 7, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of Figs. 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings. Preferably near the lower end of the said opening or slot 8, the said plate 5 is made with oppositely located cut-away portions, as 9, extending from the marginal edge-portions of the said body-plate WhlCh bound the said opening or slot 8, and whereby a substantially cross-shaped opening is rovided, as will be more particularly seen from an inspection of Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The reference-character 10 indicates a sultably formed stop-arm or post, provided at one end with a suitably-shaped enlargement, as 11, which provides a support or shoe, adapted to be placed in resting engagement with the surface 12 of the upper laterally extending rail of the lower window-sash 3, in the manner indicated in the several figures of the drawings. Upon its opposite end-portion, the said stop-arm or post 10 has a rearwardly projecting member 13, said member 13 bein formed with oppositely projecting marginal retaining fingers 14. To bring the said stop-arm or post 10 into its operative relation with the body-plate 5, the said stop-arm or post is held horizontally, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, which permits of the entrance of the fingers 14 into the cut-away portions 9, so that the member 13 can be moved through the opening or slot 8 in the body-plate, to locate said member 13 and its fingers 14 in the recess 7 of the window-sash 2, and back of the bodyplate 5. As soon as the said stop-arm or post 10 is turned in a downward direction, from the position shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings to that represented in Fig. 4, the enlargement or shoe 11 of the stop-arm or post 10 will register with the upper surface 12 of the upper laterally extending rail of the lower wmdow-sash 3, in the manner illustrated in Figs. 1, 3 and 4 of the drawings. When thus arranged, the lower window-sash can be raised a limited degree, the member 13 and fingers14 moving upwardly in the opening or slot 8 and the recess 7, until the edge 15 at the top of the recess 7 and the said member 13 and fingers 14 are brought into arresting engagement; and, likewise, the upper window-sash may be lowered until said edge 15 is brought down upon the said member 13 and fingers 14, thus limiting the respective movements of either sash, and the fingers 14 extending back of the body-plate 5 at either side of the slot or opening 8, it will be evident that the stoparm or post 10 cannot be withdrawn from its locked relation with the body-plate 5 and the two window-sashes. The arrangement of the parts of the combined safety-lock and ventilating means, when thus attached, is such that either or both window-sashes can be sufficiently raised or lowered, or both, to such a limited degree that the window may be safely opened without any danger of objectionable persons entering the room through the opened window. The location of the attachment also is such that the stoparm or post can not be reached by reaching in at the bottom or top of the lowered window-sashes, so that it is utterly impossible to disconnect the stop-arm or post 10 from its operative engagement with the bodyplate 5 of the attachment, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings.
When it is desired to raise or lower the window-sashes any other distance beyond that limited by the stop-arm or post 10, in the manner herein-above described, all that is necessary is to bring the two windowsashes into their closed relation indicated in Fig. 1, and then swing the stop-arm or post 10 from its vertical position to the horizontal position represented in said Fig. 5 of the drawings, and then entirely remove the said stop-arm or post from its operative relation with the base-plate 5. The respective movements of the two window-sashes are thereupon not interfered with, so that the upper window-sash can be freely lowered, and the lower window-sash can be freely raised. It will also be seen from the construction of the combined safety-lock and ventilating device, that it can be attached at either side of the window-sash, so that the same device may be used as a right-hand or a left-hand attachment at either side of the window. 7
I am aware that. some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention, as set forth in the foregoing specification and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as described in the said specification, nordo I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A fixture in the form of a combined safety-lock and ventilating attachment for Windows having ovable window-sashes, comprising a bodylate adapted to be attached to the front faceof one of the window-sashes, said body-plate being formed with a vertically extending guide-portion, a stop-arm entirely independent of said bodyplate, said stop-arm having a portion in slidable retaining engagement with said vertical guide-portion'and another portion adapted to be brought into retained engagement with the top-rail of the other window-sash.
2. A fixture in the form of a combined safety-lock and ventilating attachment for windows having movable window-sashes, comprising a body-plate adapted to be attached to one of the window-sashes, said body-plate being provided with a longitudinally extending slot, and a stop-arm entirely independent of said body-plate and separable therefrom, said stop-arm being provided at one end with a rearwardly extending member, said member extending through the slot in said body-plate and being slidably arranged in said slot, and laterally projecting fingers upon said rearwardly extending member, said fingers extending on opposite edges of said slot back of the said body-plate, and said stop-arm having a portion adapted to be brought into retained engagement with a portion of the other window-sash.
3. A fixture in the form of a combined safety-lock and ventilating attachment for windows having movable window-sashes, comprising a body-plate adapted to be attached to one of the window-sashes, said body-plate being provided with a longitudinally extending slot and oppositely extending cut-away portions forming with said slot a cross-shaped opening, and astop-arm entirely independent of said body-plate and separable therefrom, said stop-arm being provided at one end with a rearwardly extending member and laterally projecting fingers connected with said member, said member and said fingers being adapted to be inserted through the cross-shaped portions of said longitudinally extending slot, said member being slidably disposed in said slot and said fingers extending on opposite edges of said slot back of the said bodyplate, and said stop-arm having a portion adapted to be brought with retained engagement with a portion of the other Windowsash.
