Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS O. MCPHERSON, OF BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
WIRE MAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,599, dated May 24, 1892.
' Application filed September 17, 1891. Serial No. L106 ,022. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. MoPHERsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wire Mats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in exible wire mats, and particularly to the borders thereof, the object of the invention being to provide a IieXible wire mat with a border which will not only be durable of itself, but impart durability to the mat, while presenting a pleasing eect as to its appearance and not in the smallest degree interfering with the flexibility of the mat.
The invention consists in providing the coils of the mat at the sides thereof with short sections of wood or other lsuitable material, the same being held in the coils composing the mat, and at the ends of the mat providing one or more of the coils with sections extending the entire length of the coils.
The invention also consists in certain novel features in the arrangement and construction of parts, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which my invention is fully illustrated, the figure is a top or plan view of the flexible wire mat provided with my improved border.
The mat A is constructed of a number of helices or coils running parallel to each other and interlocking throughout the entire mat. These coils may be of any desired shape, the rectangular form, as shown in the drawing, being the construction preferred. The border is composed of the short sections B, of hard woodor other suitable material, and the long sections O for the ends. The short sections B are inserted in the coils from each side and are of a length corresponding to the width of the border desired. These sections are firmly held in place by being closely fitted into the coils, the end fastenings and the interlocked coils keeping them from being displaced; but to insure against any loosening of the coil the pins a are provided in the sections, Which, projecting up or down from the surface of the sections, engage the wire of the coil and holdl the sections of Wood in their place. The end sections O are inserted in the end coils and such a number of adjacent coils as will make a width of border equal to the length of the short sections. In constructing the border of hard wood every alternate section is of dark'wood, while the others are light in color. This alternatin g of different-colored wood can be varied greatly and a large number of woods of different shades be used and variously arranged, so as to present pleasing effects.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. In a mat, a border composed of sections of wood or other material inserted in the coils of the mat at its sides and ends, those forming the side border extending into the coils but a short distance, while those forming the end border extend the entire Width of the mat, substantially as described.
2. A border frame for iexible wire mats composed of short sections of wood or other material inserted in the coils of the mat on each side and sections inserted in the end coils of a length corresponding to the width of the mat, substantially as described.
3. A Wire mat provided with a border composed of sections of wood or other suitable material inserted in the coils of the mat around the side and ends, the said section being provided with pins for holding the sections in place, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS O. MCPHERSON.
