WIRE MAT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IRA J. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVire Mats, of which the following is a specificatlon containing a full, clear, and exact descript on, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to a wire fabric particularly intended for use as a mat, the object of my invention being to construct a simple, inexpensive and substantlal fabric, the main body portion of which is held in a substantial manner above the floor or pavement on which the mat is placed.

To the above purposes, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which Wlll be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view of a mat con structed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the longitudinally extending wires of the mat.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings: 1 designates the longitudinally extending wires forming the body of the mat, in which are formed, at equal distances apart, the vertically disposed circular loops 2, the same projecting downward below the plane occupied by the sections of wire between said loops, and these last mentioned sections are bent at angles relative the plane occupied by the loops 2, and thus each longitudinal wire has a zigzag shape with the loops 2 at the points between the bent portions.

A number of the wires 1 are arranged side by side, with the loops 2 of an adjacent pair of wires. Coinciding and passing through each row of loops 2 are straight transverse wires 3, the ends of which extend through and are tied to vertically disposed loops 4, which are formed at equal distances apart in a pair of side Wires 5 which form the edges of the mat, and which loops 4 coincide with the transverse rows of loops 2. The loops 2 are of such size as that the wires 3 fit snugly therein, and as said loops occupy Specification of Letters Patent.

vertical positions and project downward from the bodies of the wires 1 and 5, said last mentioned wires are held in a firm and substantial manner in a plane above the floor or pavement on which the mat is located.

A mat of my improved construction is simple, light, strong and durable, and can be very easily and cheaply manufactured.

I claim:

1. A mat constructed of a. series of longitudinally extending wires, each wire being bent so that its ends occupy a substantially horizontal plane and the body portion between the ends occupies a position at an angle relative the ends, a vertically disposed loop at each end of each wire and trans versely disposed wires extending through the loops.

2. A mat constructed of a series of longitudinally extending wires, each Wire being bent so that when assembled the wires are of zigzag form, a vertically disposed loop at each end of each wire, transversely disposed wires extending through the loops and binding wires located at the sides of the mat to which binding wires the ends of the transverse wires are united.

3. A mat constructed of a series of longi tudinally extending wires, each wire being bent so that when assembled the wires are of zigzag form, a vertically disposed loop at each end of each wire, projecting below the plane occupied by the bodies of the wires and transversely disposed wires extending through the loops. 4. A mat constructed of a series of longitudinally extending wires, each end of each wire being bent into a vertically disposed loop, projecting below the plane occupied by the bodies of the wires, transverse wires extending through the loops and binding wires located at the sides of the mat to which binding wires the ends of the transverse wires are united.
