Be it known that I, HIRAM W. RU TON, a citizen of theUnited States, residingat Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for .Folding Beds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improved attachment for folding beds, and is more particularly designed for use in connection with a combination-bed, such as shown and described in Letters Patent No. 460,217, dated September 29, 1891; and it has for its object 'to adapt the laterally-swinging section or book-case to be connected with the upright or stationary frame so as to be conveniently swung from either side thereof, and when closed effects a very tight connection of the parts; or the case or section may be entirely removed from the bed-frame by manipulating both of the latches, the connection being automatic, as the case or movable section has been brought against the upright section, so as to close the latter.

Referring by letter to said drawings, A in dicates the upright or stationary section of a folding bed, B the bed-section, and O a movable section designed to be used as a bookcase or other article of furniture and serve the additional function of closing the upright or stationary section when the bed has been turned therein.

Secured to the outer sides of the vertical walls a of the stationary section and at a suitable altitude are castings D. These castings D are provided with vertically-disposed eyes or sockets b, and in advance of such eyes or sockets, extending forwardly, are beveled faces 0 for a purpose which will be presently explained. These castings have a securingflange 0?, provided with eyes 6 for the reception of screws or other devices, whereby said castings are secured to the side walls of the stationary section, and the eyes or sockets are designed to extend a sufficient distance laterally from said Walls and attaching-flanges.

E indicates the latch. This latch is of the character known as a gravitating latch, being shaped substantially as shown and bent outwardly at a suitable point to form a handgrasp f. The free end of this latch, which is pivoted at one end to the side walls of the case 0, is turned downwardly, as shown, and terminates in a rounded stud or pintle 9, designed to enter the eye or socket in the castings D.

F indicates a keeper for the latch. This keeper is secured to the side walls of the case 0 and at the rear edge thereof, so as to limit the downward movement of the entering or locking end of the latch. It will be observed that there is one of these latches and keepers secured to the opposite outer sides of the case 0 and at such a point as to conveniently enter the eyes or sockets in the castings of the upright section when said case or frame has been brought into proper position with respect to said stationary section, and by having the lug eyes or castings beveled, as shown at '0, when the case or section 0 has been swung around the latching will be automatic.

From the construction described it will be seen that when it is desirable to lower the bed from its upright frame or section the ornamental case 0 may have one of its latches released from its socket and be swung around laterally to any convenient point, and it will also be observed that by manipulating both latches the case may be entirely removed from the upright section, so that I have a pair of latches, which serve the additional function pf 1lginges and are self-acting in effecting a Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with the upright or stationary section of a folding bed, of the castings D, secured one to each outer side of the vertical walls of said section and having the bevels c and the vertical eyes b, the case or swinging section and the pivoted latches, arranged one on each outer side of said swinging section and adapted to engage the eyes in said castings, whereby the two sections may be secured together in a closed position when the bed has been folded and the movable section may swing to either side in a hinged manner, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with the upright or stationary section of a folding bed, of castings having vertically-disposed eyes secured one to each outer side of said section, and a movable case or section carrying pivoted latches, one on each of its vertical outer sides, and adapted to respectively engage the eyes in the castings on the stationary section, whereby the sections may be secured together in a closed position and the movable section may be swung from either side of the stationary section in a hinged manner, substan tially as specified.
