W. N.- WINFIELD.
EXHIBITING DEVICE. No. 475,005. Patented May 17, 1892.
minaaaes: 972W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM N. \VINFIELD, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
EXHlBlTlNG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,005, dated May 17, 1892.
Application filed August 29,1891. Serial No. 404,040. (No model.)
prices of various staple articles which a dealer ma 1 kee in stock arran in them in such a o z:
shape and form that such lists will be preserved and be convenient for ready reference at any time.
lhe invention consists in the peculiar construction of a supporting-frame containing a roller, upon which are Wound two sheets or belts, having marked thereon the matter to be exhibited, one sheet adapted to be exhibited by drawing it down from the frame, the other being drawn upward at the same time and exhibited through an aperture in the casing.
The invention further consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device,
showing the belts moved into position for inspection. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section therethrough; Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the belts retracted. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation thereof.
A is a backing or frame, upon which a hollow casing B is secured. This casing has a slot 0 in its frontface, and preferably a nameplate D, extending upwardly at the top.
E and F are two spring-rollers journaled across the casing at the bottom and top, respectively.
G and H are two sheets or belts, upon which is placed the matter to be exhibited. The belt G is secured at its upper edge to the roller E, with its lower edge extendingthrough a slot I, formed in the lower edge of the casing. The belt H is secured with its lower edge upon the opposite side of the roller E and extends upwardly across the slot 0, its upper edge being secured to the roller F.
draws down on the sheet G, which unwinds,
extending that sheet beneath the casing, while the sheet H moves upward, the slack being taken up by the spring-roller F, and the matter thereon is exhibited through the slot 0. The parts are held in their adjusted position by the usual catch in the lower roller, no catch being used in the upper roller. Fig. 2 shows the sheet G extended and sheet H in position to exhibit the matter on the lower part. It will be noticed that the ends of the sheets G and H are secured to the roller E upon opposite sides, and in the winding up of said roll the sheets will wind concentrically thereon, the tension of the spring on the roller E being sufficiently strong to unwind the sheet H from the roller F.
Mydevice may be employed in many places besides the, use specified above-such, for in stance, as exhibiting a map and a directory of streets for the map-and I do not desire to limit myself to any particular use; but
What I claim-as my invention is 1. In an exhibiting device for advertising, &c., the combination, with a supportingframe having an apertured casing, of aspringroller at the lower edge of said frame, two belts concentrically wound upon said roller, one belt extending below and the other above said roller, and a spring-roller at the upper edge of the frame, to which the upper belt is attached, to take up the slack in the said upper belt, substantially as described.
2. In an exhibiting device, the combination, with a casing having a display opening therein, of a spring-roller above the opening, a spring-roller below the opening, the tension of the spring in one roller being greater than that of the otherroller, a sheet connecting the rollers, and a sheet on one roller extending to the outside of. the casing, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 7
WILLIAM N. IVINFIELD.
