Be it known that I, JOHN `THIELEN7 a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Dodge and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Horse-Collar Fastener, of which the following is a speciiication. The invention relates "to an improvement on a horse-collar fastener forming subjectmatter of an application for patent filed January 11, 1890, Serial No. 336,666, and patented April 14, 1891, No. 450,389.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of the plates which are secured to the collar to protect the latter and to increase the durability of the same.

The invention consists of the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a collar provided with a fastener embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken longitudinally of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken transversely of the fastener. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the fastener detached, the plates or sections being separated.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates a horse-collar having its ends secured by a fastener composed of sections or

2 and 3, which are secured to the collarl, and are provided with locking mechanism similar to that shown in the application above referred to. The plates or

2 and 3 are in the form of elongated horns and transversely curved or concavo-convex and conform to the couguration of the outer face of the front roll of the collar, and are provided with curved extensions 4, which conform to the configuration of the collar and are in the form of thin metal plates, also of coucavoconvex cross-sectional contour, as shown more cleai ly in Fig. 2. The extensions 4 conform to the general configuration of the adjacent portion of the collar, and the crease between the rolls is partially filled by alayer of leather 5, which is interposed between the extensions and the collar. 2 and 3 are provided with flanges 6, arranged at an angle to the plates or sections and extending inward over theends of the collar and forming abuttingsur-w faces, which protect the collar and prevent the saine being injured when drawn together for fastening. The plates or sections form a complete casing or shield for the ends of the collar and protect the same and greatly increase its strength and durability. The section 3 is provided with the socket, and the section 2 has the block and the locking mechanism, al1 of which is located on the extensions, which enable the locking mechanism to be readily secu red to the collar and to be conveniently arranged thereon. The section 3 is provided with the eyelet, which is pivoted to the extension. It will be seenthat the sections or plates greatly increase the strength and durability of the collar and receive the strains and blows during the fastening of the collar.

What I claim is- A collar-fastener forming casings to cover and protect the meeting faces of the ends of 75 a collar and adapted to receive various sizes of collars and comprising two plates or

2 and 3 in the shape of elongated horns of concavoconvex form and having curved extensions 4 in the form of thin metal plates projecting from the meeting portions of the said sections and at right angles thereto, and smooth unbroken flanges 6 at right angles to and extending throughout the transverse length of the extensions 4 and the meeting portions of the sections, said extensions4 of the section 3 carrying a stationary integral socket extending over from the end thereof, and the extension 4 of the section 2 supporting the block, and locking mechanism with which the said socket engages, substantially as described.
