SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,041, dated November 26, 1889.

Be it known that we, PETER J. SoHILn, CHARLIE 0. Serum), and FRANK L. SoHILn, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Ionia, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Boots; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hoof-boots for horses; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

This invention is designed as an improvement upon our Letters Patent dated August 21, 1888, No. 388,313, and November 6, 1888, No. 392,291.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of a hoof-boot constructed in accordance with our present invention. Fig. 2 is a reversed plan, and Fig. 3 a detail View partly in section.

A refers to a metallic easing,which is shaped to correspond generally withthe configuration of a horses hoof. This casing is usually madeup of sheet metal, galvanized iron or other non-corrodible metal being preferred. The toe or front portion of this casing is cut away to enable the toe portion 00 of the beef to project therethrough, while the upper and lower edges thereof are bent over awire B to re-enforce the same, the ends of said wire lying adjacent to the cut-away or toe portion and extending beyond the heel of the boot to form loops D. The straps E and F are riveted to the heel part of the casing and the rivets holding the straps in place dispense with the use of stitches,which, owing to the use of the article, would be liable to rot.

The casing A is to be lined entirely with sponge or its equivalent held in place by staples passing through perforations in the casing, their ends being upset over the sponge, as disclosed in our previous. patents, or by any other suitable means. A pad to contact with the bottom and heel of the hoof is used with the casing hereinbefore described, the construction thereof being substantially the same as shown in our prior patent, No. 392,291.

One of the essential features of our present invention is the toe-piece or casting G,.whieh is in the present instance made up of a single piece with a rearwardly-connecting portion G extending under the pad F and forming a support therefor. The casting G is curved upwardly at its forward end and provided with lugs g and g, the lug g being extended rearwardly and perforated for attachment to the casing by means of a bolt, and the lugs g are jammed on each side of the casing to further hold the casting thereon. The casting above described renders the front part of the casing rigid and affords a protection for the same against injury. Though we have referred to this part of the boot as being a casting, it will be understood that the same will have sufficient pliability to allow the lugs to be bent upon the casing, and will withstand blows and impact without breaking.

Having thus described our invention,w11at we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a horse-boot composed of a metal CPI/S". ing, a toe-piece and pad-support therefor consisting of a casting having its forward part curved upwardly and provided with lugs which embrace the edges of the casing, and with extended fingers for securing the same to the casing, substantially as shown.

2. In a horse-boot composed of a casing, a casting G, having a rearwardly-eurved portion extending beneath the casing, a front arched portion with lugs formed thereon, and upwardly-extending fingers for securing the same to the casing, substantially as shown.
