BED-FAN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,710, dated May'IO, 1892.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. WRIGLEY, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed- Fans, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and effective fanning apparatus, more especially adapted for use on beds; and it consists in the peculiar combination. and novel arrangement of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved fan in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same, taken 011 the line 3 3, Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates a base-plate formed with a socket portion a in its upper end, the lower end of such base being spread, as at a, forming flanges whereby the base can be conveniently screwed or otherwise secured to the side rail a of the bed-frame, as shown in Fig. 1.

B indicates a vertical standard or bar, the lower end of which fits, is vertically adjustable, and held to turn in the socket a, beingheld to any of its adjusted positions by a setscrew 0. The standard B has a bearing Z), in which is journaled the drive-wheel D, which is belted with a smaller wheel a on the outer end of the fan-shaft E, which is journaled in a bearing Z9 formed on the upper end of the bar or standard B, the inner end of such shaft carrying a fan F of any wellknown construction.

In the practical construction of my fan the fan-shaft'is of such length that a space of from four to six inches between the fan and the band-wheel e is provided, so as to allow the mosquito-bar of the bed to be pulled down outside to keep the nurse from off the bed.

G indicates a wire guard placed about the fan, as shown, to protect the mosquito-bar from the fan while in motion.

H indicates the treadle, the arm H of which has a universaljoint connection h, with an extensible section I, arranged to be adjustably connected with the pitman-rod J,

wrist-pin d on the drive-wheel D.

From the foregoing description, in connection with the drawings, it will be noticed that by constructing a fan as described and shown the same can be readily adjusted to different heights and it can be turned so as to throw the breeze in any direction desired. Making a jointed pitman and a universal connection between it and the treadle-arm provides for adjusting the standard to side bedrails of different heights and also admits of the treadle being arranged parallel with the bed when the fan is adjusted at right angles or diagonally thereto.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the base A, the bar B, held for vertical and rotatable adjustment on said base, the shaft E, journaled in the upper end of the bar, provided with a fan at its inner end and a drive-wheel at its outer end, the wheel D, journaled on the bar B and belted with the wheel 6, and the treadle and pitman connection for operating the wheel D, all arranged substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination, with the base A, the bar B, held for vertical and rotatable adj ustment on the base A, the fan-carrying shaft E, journaled in the upper end of the bar B, and the drive-wheels D and e, arranged as shown, of the treadle II, the pitman J, connected with the Wheel D and provided at its lower end with an extensible member I, said member and the treadle-arm having a universal joint, substantially as and for the purpose described.
