To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. OVERALL, ofMemphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Fans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speci- :licatiom and in which Figure l is a detail view of the spring-motor and its attachments for Operating the fan bar or shaft. Fig. 2Vis a front elevation of part of the fan-bar with one of its fans, showing the motor in section. Fig. 3 is a crosssection of the fan-shaft, showing one of the fans and fan-clamps; and Fig. 4 isa perspective view of a hedstead, illustrating the ap plication of luy improved automatic fan.

My invention has relation to automatic fans, or fans Operated by a train of clock-work and adapted to be arranged in juxtaposition to a bedstead, dining-room table, chair, or hummock for the purpose ol' fanning the occupant, cooling off the air, and driving away iiies and mosquitoes; and it consists in the combinati'on ofthe motor, fan-shaft, fans, and standard or frame for supporting the apparatus, as

hereinafter more fully set forth.

The frame or standard consists of two posts or uprights, A A, havingoross-headsa attheir lower ends, forming feet. The standards are connected at their upper ends bythe fau-shaft B, at opposite ends Ot which are sleeves or thimbles C C, which slide upon posts A, and may be retainedin any given position by means ot' set-screws D D.` p

`Upon the fan-shaft B are two or more slides,

E E, each one ot' which has a socket, E', into which is inserted a set-screw, e, and also a setscrew,f, inserted through the back part, which works-against the fan-shaft B, so that by tightening the latter the sleeve may be fastened in any given position upon the shaft.

F Fare the fans, the stems F ot' which are inserted through the sockets E', and held in place therein adjustably by means of the setscrews e. The stems F have universal joints fi, by means of which the angle ot' the fan may be adjusted to any desired position, and when so adjusted be held in place by a set-screw, b.

The fan-shaft B is mounted in projecting ears c c in the thimble C, so as to give it a free rocking or oscillating motion, and one of the thim bles C has attached to it the box or casing G, which contains the spring-motor. The latter consists essentially of a train of wheels, H, actuated by an ordinary spring and spring-barrel, through which arotary motion is communicated to the disk I,which projects outside of the motor-box. In/the face of disk I is affixed adjustably a Wrist-pin, K, in which ispivoted the pitman L. In theouter end of this is hinged a screw-bolt, M, which is inserted through `an aperture in the end of shaft B contiguous to the motor.

On screw M work two nuts, nzY m, one on each side of the shaft, by means of which the screw may be adjusted relative to shaft B, through which it is inserted. It follows that by adjusting screw M up or down (which may readily be effected while the apparatus is in motion) the throw of pitman L and of the shaft may be regulated, thus regulating the 1 arc of vibration ot' the fans F.

Having thus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of` the United States- 1. The combination of the standards A A, having bottom supports, a a, adjustable sleeves C G, having ears c c and set-screws D D, rock-shaft B, perforated at one end, screwbolt M, inserted through the perforated rockshaft., and provided with the. adjusting-nuts m fm, motor H, incased in a box contiguous to and forming part of one of the adjustable sleeves C, disk I, having adjustable wrist-pin K, and pitman L, connecting said wrist-pin and the screw-bolt M, all constructed and combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.

2. The combination of the oscillating fanshaft B, sleeves E, each having a socket, E', and pair ot' set-screws, c and f, and fans F, having shafts or handles F', provided with universal joints i, having set-screws b, suband specified.
