To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS J. HARRIS and GALEB F. GREER, of Sardis, in the county of Panola and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cham-Motors; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front View, part of the box or casing having been removed in order to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to motors for operating that class of churns which are provided with a vertical reciprocating dasher;A and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinaf ter fully described, and Vparticularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A repre! sents a suitablyconstructed frame, having bearings for the main shaft B, upon which the spring C is wound by means of a suitable key or crank, D. `Shaft B carries a ratchet-wheel, E, which is connected by a spring-pawl, F, with the gear-wheel G, which is loose upon said shaft, but which, by the pawl-and-ratchet mechanism, is caused to revolve with said shaft by the action of the spring. Gear-wheel G is connected,by a train, H, of wheels and pinions,with a shaft, I, the front end of which extends beyond the frame, as shown, and carries a balance-wheel, J. The frame A and operatin g mechanism are inclosed within a suitable box or casing, K, having a slot, L, for the projecting end of shaft I. The balance-wheel J has a crank or wrist-pin, M, upon which is pivoted a pitman, N, to the outer or free end of which isswiveled a sleeve, O, having a setscrew, P.
Q is a bracket secured to the top of the box or casingK, and having an opening, R, serving to guide the dasher-staff of the churn, as
will be presently described. Bracket Q is also provided with downward-depending hangers S S, between which are pivoted a pair of levers, T T, the lower ends of which may clamp the sides of the rim of balance-wheel J.
U is a screw working in the bracket Q between the levers T, the upper ends of which may be forced apart by the point of said screw, thus causing their lower ends to clamp the balance-wheel, thus acting as a brake to prevent it from revolving. By this construction of the brake mechanism the axis of the balance-wheel receives no pressure, and injury to the operating mechanism is thus prevented.
V is the churn, andWthedasher-staif, which is secured in the collar O by set-screw P, its upper end passing through the opening B in bracketV Q, which serves to guide the said dasher-stai when reciprocating vertically.
The operation and advantages of our invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. 1t is simple in construction, easily managed, and the power requires no attention beyond that of winding the spring. While this is bein g done, and when the churning has been finished, the brake may be easily applied by simply turning the screw U.
Having thus described our invention, We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statest i In a churn-motor, the combination, with the frame A, main shaft B, and spring (J, operating through a train of wheels the shaft I, of the casing K, having slot L, through which said shaft projects, and bracket Q, having perforation B., hangers S, levers T and set-screw U, the balance-wheel J having wrist-pin` or crank M, the pitman N, having swiveled collar O, provided with set-screw P', and the churn-dasher W, all arranged and operating as set forth.
