UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC VAN ZANDT JONES, OF SALADO, TEXAS.
CHURN-POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,898, dated November 21, 1882.
Application filed October 4, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC V. Z. JONES, of Salado, in the county of Bell and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Churn-Powers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists principally in providing means whereby a churn may be attached to a sewing-machine, so that both sewing and churning may be done at the same time; also, of the combination, with such means, of a power to be operated by hand or some motor, for running'the sewing-machine and churn both at the same time or either alone, as desired.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional front elevation, showing my invention applied to a sewing-machine. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the leverconnecting the power with the churndasher, and Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional elevation taken on the line 09 as of Fig. 1.
Arepresents the churn; B, the churn-dasher; and O, a slotted lever, which is fulcrumed in the post D, rising fromthe table E, and is connected at one end to the dasher B and atthe other, by means of the crank-pin d, to the bandwheel 'J, which is fixed upon the shaft G, which is revolved by the band H passing over the drive-wheel I and said band-wheel J.
The shaft G and the drive-wheel I may be those of a sewing-machine, as shown in Fig. 2, or the said shaft may be a separate shaft journaled in suitable bearings secured upon the table E; and the drive-wheel I, instead of being that of a sewing-machine, may be secured upon a suitable crank-shaft, K, journaled in the side standards or supports, L L, of
the table E, which are similar to the standards L L of the sewing-machine, the shaft being adapted to be revolved by the lever M, which is fulcrumed in the post N and connected to dtlga crank m of the shaft by the connectingro The members 0 c of the slotted lever O are rounded upon the inner edges, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and upon the pin d is placed the guttered roller f, which fits the rounded edges of the members 0 c, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the lever 0 will be held in place thereby and always in position for the easy movement of the roller f along the slot as the shaft Gr revolves.
In order to readily attach the leverG to the power or to the sewing-machine and detach it therefrom, the large circular opening 9 is made in the lever at the end of the slot, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, which opening is of such size as to pass over the roller, as will be clearly understood from the drawings.
The outer end of the lever O is provided with the series of holes a a, by which the stroke of the dasher B may be regulated to suit the quantity of cream in the churn. In case the churn is attached to a sewing-machine, as shown in Fig. 2, the sewing-machine and churn will be run by foot-power but in case the lever M is used the whole will be operated by hand, steam, horse, or water power; and instead of using the treadle P of the sewingmachine, the lever M may be attached to the crank-pin of the drive-wheel of the sewing-machine and the same operated by hand or other power applied to the said lever.
To apply myinvention to a sewing-machine it will be understood that it is only necessary to provide the band-wheel J with the pin 61 and roller j, which may be done by screw-tapping the band-wheel and screwing the pin firmly into the tap, and to provide the table E with the post D. Other suitable means for securing the pin to the wheel J might be employed and not depart from the spirit of my invention.
By the use of my invention much labor and time will be saved, since both sewing and churning may be done at the same time.
The outer end of the lever C may be connected to the dasher B by means of a ball-andsocket or other flexible connection to accommodate the circular movement of the outer end of the lever to the vertical movement of the dasher.
Instead of using the post N in which to fulcrum the lever M, the arm N may be used, which is attached to the table E, as shown in Fig. 5; and instead of using the slotted lever 0 and grooved roller d for attaching the churn to the machine, the plain lever C and pitman C" may be used, as shown in said Fig. 5, and not depart from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The lever 0, combined and connected by a slot on one side ofits fulcrum with the crankpin of a rotary disk or wheel, whereby it may be oscillated, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The slotted lever 0, having the large passage g, in combination with the pin d and roller f, the pin being adapted to be attached to the band-wheel of a sewing-machine, and the free end of the lever being adapted to be attached to a churn-dasher, substantially as set forth.
3. The members 0 c of the lever O, rounded upon their inner edges, in combination with the concaved roller f, the lever being formed with the passage 9, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4:. The lever M, fulcrumed in the post N, in combination with the crank-shaft K, drivewheelI, connecting-rod 0, band I-I, band-wheel J, crank-pin d, slotted lever O, fulcrumed in the post D, and attached at its outer end to the churn-dasher B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
