Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. BLAYDES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clayton, in the county of St. Louis and State of lvfissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Motors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in motor operated fans and more particularly to a spring motor fan, the object of the invention being to provide a fan of the above character which is so constructed and mounted that the fan during its rotation will be oscillated back and forth so that the air therefrom will be thoroughly distributed throughout the room in which the fan is located.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a spring motor fan, the operating mechanism of which is arranged within a casing, said casing being pivotaily mounted upon a suitable base so that the fan may be readily adjusted to direct the current of air from the fan either high or low, the casing being held in an adjusted position by means of a set screw.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a spring motor fan which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
ith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, the casing being shown in vertical section; Fig. 2 is a front elevation, parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is a top plan of the rack used in oscillating the fan; and Fig. 4. is a fragmentary side elevation illustrating the manner of adjusting the casing with respect to the base. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5 5, Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the base which is preferably in the form of a ring supported in spaced relation with the floor by means of the legs 2. Extending upwardly from op- Specification of Letters Patent.

posite sides of the base are the upright sup porting standards 3, the upper ends of which are pivotally secured to the central portion of the casing --las shown at 5. Socured to one side of the casing 4: is a curved plate (3 which provided with an elongated slot 7 adapted to receive a set screw 8, carried by one of the standards 3, for holding the casing in various adjusted positions.
Arranged within the casing f is a supporting frame 9, having its lower end mounted for rotation within the casing, s shown at 10, the upper end of the frame be ing reduced in size and provided with an upwardly projecting shaft 11 which is mounted for rotation within the upper ends of the supporting members 12. Mounted within the frame 9 is a rotary spring drum 13 which is connected by means of a train of gears 14 to a longitudinal shaft 15 mounted within the lower end of the reduced portion of the frame. The longitudinal shaft 15 is connected by means of a train of gears 16 to the fan shaft 17 mounted in the upper end of the frame 9.
A suitable fan 18 of any desired form is mounted upon the outer end of the shaft 17 and secured to the upper end of the frame 9 and inclosing the fan is a guard 19. Mounted upon the outer end of the shaft 15 is a gear 20 which is preferably semicircular and adapted to engage an arcuate rack 21 secured to the inner side of the casing 41. From this it will be seen that upon the rotation of the shaft 15 the gear 20 will rotate upon the rack 21 until the fiat side 22 thereof is reached which will release the gear from the rack, the frame 9 being oscillated in the opposite direction by the tension of the spring 23.
The spring 23 is inclosed within a suitable casing 24:, one end of said spring being secured to the casing and the other end thereof being secured to the shaft 11, so that upon the oscillation of the frame in one direction, the spring 23 will be placed under tension. The frame is rotated in one direction by means of the gear 20 and the rack 21, said gear intermittently engaging the rack and as the end of the rack is reached, during the rotation of the gear, the teeth of the gear will be disengaged from the rack and the flat side 22 will be disposed in opposed relation with the rack to release the frame and allow the spring 23 which has been previously placed under tension, by

From this it will be seen that the gear engaging with the rack 21, will rotate the frame in one direction until the flat side of the gear has been reached and the spring 23 will rotate the frame in the opposite direction, while the flat side of the gear is arranged It will be apparent that when it is desired to adjust the current of air high or low, it is only necessary to loosen the set screw 8 and tilt the casing to the desired angle. The set screw is then tightened to hold the same in the desired position.
A. friction bearing member 2a is provided and is adapted for engagement with the shaft 17 so that the fan member 18 may be readily started and stopped, when desired by adjusting the screw bolt which is mounted in the upper end of the supporting frame 9.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it
vided' a simple and durable spring motor fan which during its operation will be oscillated to distribute the air throughout the room in" which the same is located. It will be further seen that the same may also be readily adjusted so. that the current of air, from the fan may be directed either high or low as desired. The device, as herein shown and described, is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
WVhile I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construct-ion and in the proportions may i be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.
hat I claim is 1. A-device of the class described including a pivotally mounted casing, a frame arranged therein for oscillating movement, a' spring actuated fan mounted on said frame, an arcuate rack carried by the casing, a gear adapted to engage said rack at certain times for oscillating said frame in one direction and means for oscillating said frame in the opposite directions.
2. A device of the class described including a pivot-ally mounted casing, a frame mounted in said casing for oscillating movement, a spring actuated fan mounted on said frame, an areuate rack carried by the casing, a gear carried by the frame and adapted to engage the rack at certain times to oscillate the frame in one direction, a spring adapted to be placed under tension during said oscillation, the tension of said spring returning the frame in the opposite direction.
3. A device of the class described including a casing, a frame ar'anged therein for oscillating movement, a fan carried by said frame, an arcuate rack carried by the casing, gear adapted to intermittently engage said rack for oscillating said frame in one direction, a shaft extending upwardly from the frame, and a spring mounted thereon to return the frame to its normal position.
