To all whom it may concern:

BeitknownthatLHERRIOKHEWIrT Roorrn, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Brooklymin the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookbinding; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has relation to improvements in bookbinding; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and described.

The principal object is to produce a bookbinding of such a character as to be capable of retaining the cover and leaves firmly and strongly in place, and at the sametime concealing all parts which are liable to mar the appearance of the completed book.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a body of leaves bound together in accordance with my invention, the cover being removed. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal section with the cover in place, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section also with the cover in proper position.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates the leaves of the book or periodical, having arranged longitudinally with their inner edges, and preferably at intervals of every six leaves, strips of pasteboard B. The obj ect of these pasteboard strips is, upon the removal of one or more thereof, to onablea certain number of leaves to be inserted in the place formerly occupied thereby without in any manner stretching the back or cover of the book.

The letter C indicates metallic clampingplates,which are arranged longitudinally upon the top and bottom of the inner edges of the body of leaves. Passing transversely through the leaves, through the intervening card-board strips, and through the metallic clamping plates is a series of wires C, the ends of which, when all the parts have been properly adjusted, are designed to be bent down upon the clamping-plates.

The two stiff portions D D of the cover have the cloth backing E, as usual. It will be noticed, however, from the drawings that said cloth backing is provided with two projecting extensions, (designated by the letters e 6,) each of which passes under the metallic strips, or between said strips and theleaves of the book, and then between the strips and the stifi portions D D, and finally have their ends pasted or otherwise secured to said stiff portions D D of the cover, thereby covering the bent ends of the wires C and presenting a neat and finished appearance when the book is opened. It will of course be understood that the wires C also pass through these extensions c 6, thereby providing for the secure holding of the cover in place.

In carrying out my invention I first arrange the leaves properly with the pasteboard strips adjusted thereto. The cloth extensions are next placed in position, and finally the metallic clamping-plates. A series of holes is then made transversely through the parts described to receive the wires C, the free ends of the latter being bent down at right angles upon the clampingplates. All that now remains in order to complete the binding is to simply turn the ends of the cloth extensions 6 6 over the metallic clamping-strips and secure the same to the stiff portions of the cover in any desired manner.

While I have described my invention as particularly applicable to books, it is of course obvious that it will be equally well adapted as a cover for the reception of sheet-music, newspapers, periodicals, and the like, which can be secured in the form of a book when a sufficient number has accumulated.

It is further apparent that I furnish means for binding with or without stiff or flexible covers, inasmuch as the parts D D of the cover and its cloth backing may be omitted and still a complete binding result. My invention therefore provides a simple and effective means for binding which shall be strong and durable and at the same time present a neat and finished appearance. The

great advantage, however, consists in the rapidity with which the binding may be effected.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. The combination of a series of leaves, clamping-plates arranged longitudinally upon the top and bottom of the inner edges of the body of leaves, a cover provided with cloth extensions, said extensions passing first between the clamping-plates and leaves and thence around and between said plates and the adjacent side of the cover, to which they are finally secured, and transverse Wires passing through the leaves, through the portions of the cloth extensions adjacent to the leaves, and through the clamping plates, upon Which they are bent down at right angles, substantially as set forth.

2. In a bookbinding, the combination of a series of leaves, strips arranged at intervals between the series of leaves for enabling the back or cover to contain a greater or less number of leaves, clamping-plates arranged longitudinally upon the top and bottom of the inner edges of the body of leaves,a cover provided with cloth extensions passing beneath the clamping-plates and over the same and having their inner ends secured to the stiff portions of the cover, and transverse Wires passing through the leaves, through the cloth extensions of the cover, and finally through the clamping-plates, being bent down at right angles thereon, substantially as set forth.
