DEVICE FOR MARKING GOODS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,079, dated May 3, 18921.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SAMPSON H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lockhart, in the county of- Caldwell and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Marking Goods; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device for marking goods, showing. the same in the form in which it is placed for sale in the market. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device when bent into its proper position for adapting it to use. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the middle of the device. My invention has relation to devices for marking goods with the price, quality, or any other mark, and is more especially adapted for use on dry goods and similar fabrics which come in rolls or bolts.

My improvement consists in the detailed construction of the device, which will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed, and which constitutes a modification of or improvement upon the marking device for which Letters Patent of the United States, No. 325,154, were granted to me on the 25th day of August, 1885, my present improvement having for its object to simplify and cheapen the device described and claimed in the Letters Patent above referred to.

' Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a strip of ductile sheet metal or any other material cut from a sheet of suitable size and thickness and consisting of a square part a and a tapering projection or finger l). The outer end of the tapering finger b is provided with a pointed prong or hook B, which, if desired,

may be integral with the finger itself, or it may be made separate therefrom and fastened to the outer end of the finger by soldering, riveting, or in any other suitable manner. The enlarged square portion a has three of its sides doubled upon itself, so as to form flanges O, the fourth side D being bent so as to form a shoulder or offset 61.

In using the device the price and any other matter with which it is desired to label the goods is marked upon the tag' E, of cardboard or any other suitable material, and this tag is attached to the square part a by slipping it between its flanges G, as shown in the drawings. The shoulder or offset cl will prevent the tag from slipping out accidentally, and after the marking-tag has been placed in its proper position the finger b is bent at right angles and inserted into the bolt at one end between the layers of cloth or other fabric, as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. When the device is in this position, it is prevented from slipping out and getting lost by the prong B entering the layers of cloth, and thus it will be seen that it cannot be readily withdrawn or become lost until after all the cloth or other fabric has been unwound from the bolt.

1' am aware that marking devices have been heretofore constructed comprising an arm or bar adapted to enter between the folds of the fabric and provided with means for hold- .ing the arm or bar in place-such as a barb or hook-the bar being provided at its outer end with a hinged tag, and I am also aware that tags have been heretofore constructed consisting of a casing provided on one of its sides with flanges adapted to receive and retain a suitable marking-card, and I do not, therefore, claim such construction broadly; but

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
