RAILWAY-TICKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 473,592, dated April 26, 1892. Application filed February l2, 1892. Serial No. 421,279. (No specimens.)

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. SHATTUC, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railway-Tickets; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a coupon or mileage railway-ticket; and it consists of the devices and appliances and theircombination and arrangement, as hereinafter specified and claimed, and illustrated in the drawings submitted herewith, in which- Figure l is a plan view showing my invention with the covers opened. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the same, showing the cover partially unfolded to more clearly illustrate my improvement. the band. Fig. 6 shows a modification of the device, the attaching-strip Bbeing omitted and the ticketstrip being secured to one of the covers.

The object of my invention is to provide a ticket of this class of superior utility and adaptability and one which may be more readily manipulated than tickets of this general nature heretofore in ordinary use.

To these ends I carry out my invention as follows:

In the drawings, A represents a continuous coupon-ticket strip alternately folded, and B denotes a cover portion,preferably arranged to form upper andlower covers B B2, embracing the folded ticket-strip and an attaching-strip B3, to which the ticket-strip is secured. I do not, however, limit myself to the employment of the attaching-strip Bas it may be dispensed with without departing from my invention. If used, the attaching-strip is folded inward between the cover-strips B B2, with the ticketstrip engaged therewith.

Fig. 3 shows a modification of It is well understood that in this kind of tickets it is desirable and essential that the ticket-strip should be so arranged as to be pulled out easily and readily when any of the coupons are to be detached, and it is especially important that the arrangement of the folded ticket-strip and the method of its engagement with the cover portion should be such that should more of the ticket-strip be pulled out at once than was desired to be detached the extra portion so pulledV out may be readily and conveniently restored to its proper place.

My invention is especially designed to overcome any difficulty of this kind and to facilitate getting at the strip in an easy manner, so as to replace it in such an event quickly and freely. To this end I employ a suitable band D, preferably an elastic band, which is engaged .across the face of the folded ticketstrip, the band being engaged either with the margins/of the attaching-strip B3 or directly with the margins of one of the covers, as with the cover B.

My invention avoids passing the band around the folded ticket-strip and adjacent cover portion, as such an engagement renders it a difficult matter to get at the strip to replace it should it be pulled outmore than required.

, As shown in Figs. l and 2, the band across the ticket-strip is engaged with the attachingstrip B3, which is recessed or slitted at its edges, preferably at two points on each edge, as shown at aa a2 a3. This'inay conveniently be done by perforating the attaching-strip adjacent to its lateral edges, as shown at a4 a5 a6 a?. On one edge the attaching-strip need only be slitted from the edge into the perforations, as shown at a8 a9. In this manner the band D may be passed through the slits as a9 into the adjacent perforations, and so be securely held in place, as the slits, while allowing the entrance of the band into the perforations, are not wide enough to permit the accidental disengagement of the band therefrom. On the opposite side the margin of the attaching-strip is cut away to form channels am au, leading into the adjacent perforations and permitting the band being readily released f-roin the attaching-strip upon that side of said strip. Thus the band may be readily IOC released from the ticket-strip altogether by simply detaching the band from one side of the attaching-strip, allowing the ticket to be rearranged with perfect freedom, after which the band may be readily 11e-engaged across the face of the folded ticket-strip, inasmuch as the band does not pass around said strip. The attaching-strip may, however, be omitted, as above stated, in which event the margins of the adjacent cover portion, as the portion B', are recessed in a perfectly-analogous manner to that above explained.

I would have it understood that I do not conne myself to this particular method alone of engaging the band D at the margins of either the attaching-strip or cover portion, as instead of forming the recesses a a a2 a3 in the margins thereof, as above described and as herewith shown, my invention contemplates as coming Within its scope any manner or means of engaging tl'.e band at the margins of the cover-strip B, so that the band shall simply extend across the face of the ticketstrip and be detachable at one of the margins. The shape and form of the recesses a a a2 a3 are not material, and the means of engaging the band with the cover-strip B may be varied in any desired manner, as contemplated by my invention. Thus, for example, instead of recessing the margins of the cover portion said portion may be provided with hooks F or similar devices, with which the band may be engaged. An endless elastic band is preferably employed to fasten the ticket to the cover portion, the band crossing the ticket at two points or along two lines, as shown.

Between the two adjacent recesses a d and d2 a3 is formed a shoulder b upon each margin of the cover portion. The band simply engages under this shoulder and extends thereacross from one marginal recess to another on each side without passing around the ticket and cover portion. The double crossing of the band across the face of the ticket along two lines aids very materially in preventing the ticket-strip being pulled out more than a single layer at a time and overcomes the pulling out of two or three or more folds at a time, thus preventing, also, the bunching of the ticket. This construction and arrangement also enables me to reduce the'thickness of the book as a whole to the minimum.

I would have it understood that in the use of the term cover portion in the following claims l include any part of the cover-strip B, whether the portion B3 or B.

I do not limit myself to the use of an endless band crossing the ticket along two lines, as a straight piece of elastic material might be employed properly engaged at its extremities to the margins of the co ver-strip, as shown in Fig. 3.

What I claim as my invention is 1. A railway-ticket having,in combination` a cover-strip, a folded coupon-ticket strip, and a band extending laterally across the face of but not around the ticket-strip and engaged with the margins of the cover-strip on opposite sides of the ticket, said band having a readily-removable engagement with the margin of the cover-strip at one side thereof,sub stantially as described.

2. A railway-ticket haviug,in combination, a cover-strip formed with marginal recesses on opposite sides thereof, a folded couponticket strip, and an elastic band extending across one face of but not around the ticket and engaged in said marginal recesses of the cover-strip, said band having a readily-removable engagement from the recesses on one side of the cover-strip, substantially as described.

3. A railway-ticket having,in combination, a cover-strip, a folded coupon-ticket strip, and a band engaged with the opposite margins of the cover-strip and extending in two lines across the face of but'not around the ticket-strip, said band having a readily-removable engagement with one of the margins of the cover-strip, substantially as described.

4. A railway-ticket having,in combination, a cover-strip, a folded coupon-ticket strip, and a band extending laterally across'the face of but not around the ticket-strip, said band engaged with the cover-strip on opposite sides of the ticket and having a readily-removable engagement therewith at oneside thereof, substantially as described.
