GOMBINBD INHALBR AND MBDIQATOR.
No. 473,526. Padtented Apr. 26, 1892.
)@2195 S 6'5- @i Y (1T/vengon- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. SENCENBAUGH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TC lEDVARD C. CLAY, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED INHALER AND MEDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,526, dated April 26, 1892.
Serial No. 400,104. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN J. SENCENBAUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Inhaler and Medicator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in what are known as medicators or inhalers, the former name being the better for the reason that in some of these medicators, as in the one hereinafter described, the prepared air with which the affected parts are treated is forced into contact therewith instead of drawn past the same by the act of inspiration. In these devices the air is commonly passed through either solid or liquid remedies, in order that it may take up certain portions of these remedies and carry them to the parts to be treated. yThe most common solid used for this purpose is menthol. In the use of the same there is ordinarily great difficulty in replacing the menthol when eX- hausted, and the operation of so doing ordinarily amounts to the reconstruction of the medicator. Again, it is desirable to use certain liquids in connection with the menthol and to pass the air through said liquids, as
well as through the menthol, in order that it may take up part of the same.
The purpose of my invention is, first, to provide means whereby the menthol or similar substance may be easily removed and replaced, and also means for holding` the liquid out of contact therewith and isolated therefrom.
Referring to the drawings for the preferred construction of my invention, Figure l is a perspective of the complete device; Fig. 2, a cross-section; Figs. 3 and 4, respectively, side views and perspective ofthe separate portions of the device taken apart.
Applying reference-letters to the drawings, A and B are two bowls fitting together to form a hollow receptacle, the bowlA extending upward in the form of two tubes a, adapted to enter the nostrils, and the bowl B having a pipe or mouth-piece b, through which air may be forced into and through the chamber within the receptacle. A cup C, fitting snuglyV within the portion A and having a perforated bottoni, is provided with a bail c, curved inward at c and small enough to project into the portion B. The menthol orsimilar lnaterial is placed within the cup and a sponge c2 pressed down overit, where it is held in place by the inward bends c of the bail c. Another sponge b is placed in the bowl B, the cup C placed bottom upward in the portion A, and the two parts then pressed together, when the bail c, extending downward, will rest upon the sponge b and hold it securely in place, preventing it from touching the sponge c2.
I/Vhatever liquid it is desired to use is placed in the sponge b', where it will be perfectly isolated from the menthol, as well as the sponge c resting thereon.,
When it becomes desirable to replace the menthol, it is obvious that the device need merely be taken apart and the cup C withdrawn, when it becomes an easy. matter to clean the same and refill it.
A great many variations in the particular form and arrangement of my device might be .made without departing from'the principle thereof. The bail cis not absolutely essential, although exceedingly convenient in removing the cup C, for the inner portion of the bowl B could be lnade so small and the sponge h iitted so tightly therein or in an enlargement in the bottom thereof that it would be 'impossible for the two Sponges to come into contact.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a device of the class described, the combination of two bowls separably connected to form a chamber, a cup removably secured in one of said bowls and adapted to contain a suitable drug, a sponge secured in the other of said bowls and adapted to be moistened with a suitable liquid, and means for maintaining a space'between said cup and sponge, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the portions A B, of the cup C, having the bail c, adapted to receive and retain a suitable drug, and the sponge b,iso1ated therefrom by means of the the interior, held away from the sponge c2 by bail c, substantially as described. means of the bail c, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the ortions A B, of the cnp C, having the bailpc, a suitable JOHN 'T' SENOENBAUGH' 5 drug Within the cup, the sponge c2, holding Witnesses:
the same in place and itself retained by means H. BITNER, of the bend c', and a second sponge b Within CHARLES O. SHERVEY.
