UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. ALLEN, OF HUENEME, CALFCRNIA.
VAGINAL SYRINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,124, `dated May 27, 1902.
Application led May 27, 1901.
T @ZZ whom, it nifty concer-n:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Huenenie, in the county of Ventura and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Vaginal Syringe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a vaginal syringe. The purpose of the invention is to provide a syringe modeled in accordance with the anatomical curve of the vagina and of such size, shape, and length as to facilitate its introduction and prevent injury to the delicate organs, and, further, to so construct the syringe that when placed in position it will completely seal the entrance into the vagina, so that the liquid introduced from an elevated fountain, for example, will accumulate in the vaginal cavity and will expand the cavity to its fullest capacity and the material be held there for any length of time in close contact with the entire diseased surface and afterward eX- and, further, to so construct the syringe that after the same has been in use for some time and has become unsanitary it may be easily and quickly taken apart for the purpose of cleansing.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as Will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved syringe. 'Fig 2 is an outer end view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the syringe.
The syringe consists of a frame A, preferably made of hard rubber, and a pliable or iiexible body B, terminating at its inner end in a tip C. The frame A consists of a front plate 10, which, as shown in Fig. 2, is usually of oval shape, and this front plate is provided with a marginal bead 11, as is best shown in Fig. 3. A tubular stem 12 is curved upward from the rear face of the plate at its central portion, the curve of the stem 12 being made to conform substantially to the natural curve of the vagina. Near the rear end of the Serial No. 62,127. (No model.)
tubular stem 12 an exterior collar 13 is pref erably formed, and the stem 12 is provided with an extension 14 at the front of the plate 10,which extension receives the threaded end of a plug 15, to which plug a iexible hose 16 is attached, adapted for connection with an elevated fountain of any description.
A drain-plug 17 is secured in the front plate 10 of the frame at or near the bottom portion of the said plate. This drain-plug 17 is given :a downward inclination and is adapted for connection With the offtake-hose 18, the said hose being intended to carry off the liquid from the syringe after the liquid has served its purpose. The body portion B of the syringe is of soft rubber and is of conical shape, and the tip C constitutes an integral portion of the inner end of the body B, and this tip is given an upward curvature. The body and tip, as stated, are made of soft rubber of different degrees of thickness and flexibility to suit the various conditions and requirements,
the tip C being of much greater thickness than the body portion B.
The outer end of the body portion B is provided With a marginal rib 19, and thisportion of the body is sprung over the rib 11 of the plate 10i and the rib of the body engages with the `outer face of theV plate within the line of the marginal rib 11 of the plate, so that the body is held in liquid-tight engagement with the front plate 10 of the frame.
The tip C is provided with an internallyi formed neck 2O at its inner end, and the end of this neck is adapted to engage with the rib 18 on the tubular stem 12 of the frame when the rear end of the said stem is introduced into the forward end of the tip. The tip C is provided with series of apertures or openings 21, whereby liquid which passes through the stem 12 into the tip may escape through the said apertures 21 into the vagina, and the liquid escapes from the vagina through openings 22, which are made in the body B, preferably adjacent to the tip C, and the liquid from the chamber in the body passes out through the medium of the drain-plug 17.
It will thus be observed that the -liquid after having been used does not enter the body of the syringe through the same opening which supplies the fresh and unused liquid, but renters through the independent IOO openings 22. Therefore the fresh liquid passing through the stem l2 into the flexible tip is not contaminated by the liquid that has once been used. When the flow of -liquid is interrupted at the offtake-pipe 18-as, for example, through the medium of a pinchcock or its equivalent-the liquid will be confined in the vagina, causing it to expand or distend, smoothing out the many folds and allowing the liquid to penetrate between the folds, and, in fact, reach the entire surface of the mucous membrane.
It will be observed -that the body of the syringe may be removed from the frame and turned inside out and thoroughly cleaned, rendering the syringe perfectly hygienic and antiseptic.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secu re by Letters Patentl. A vaginal syringe, consisting of a rigid frame comprisinga front plate provided with a. marginal bead, a tubular inlet-stem, and a drain-outlet, and a body of flexible material terminating in an apertured tip of greater thickness than the material of the body, the said body being of conical shape, the forward end of the body being arranged to be sprung over the marginal bead of the front plate, as described.
2. In a vaginal syringe, a frame comprising a front plate, a tubular stem extending through the front-.plate to a distance beyond the rear thereof, the rear portion of the stem being curved, and a drain-plug which passes through the said plate, and a conical body of flexible material, provided with a tip also of flexible materialbnt of greater thickness than the body, which tip is closed at its rear end and is in communication with the inner or rear end of the tubular stem, the tip having an upward curve, being provided with series of apertures, the body being likewise provided with apertures, and means substantially as described, for detachably attaching the said body to the front plate of the frame.
3. In a Vaginal syringe, the combination, with a frame, consisting of a front plate, an
ward end of the body being in frictional en-I gagement with the peripheral portion of the plate of the frame, an upwardly-curved apertured tip formed integral with the inner or rear end of the said body, the material of the tip being of greater thickness than the material of the body, the rear or inner end of the tip being closed and its forward end in communication with the said tubular stem and the body being provided with apertures adjacent to the forward end of the said tip, as described.
4. In a vaginal syringe, the combination, with a frame, consisting of a front plate provided with a marginal bead, an upwardlycurved tubular stem extending from the rear portion of the front plate and provided with a collar near its rear end, and adrain-plug extending outward from the said front plate, of a body constructed of flexible material and having a conical shape, the forward end of the body being arranged to be sprung over the bead of the front plate and having a marginal rib adapted to engage with the outer face of the plate within the line of the marginal bead, an upwardly curved apertured tip formed integralwith the inner or rear end of the said body, the material of the tip being of greater thickness than the material of the body, the rear or inner end of the tip being closed and its forward end in communication with the said tubular stem, and the body being provided. with apertures adjacent to the forward end of the said tip, for the purpose set forth.`
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES F. ALLEN.
