NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1906.
Application filed November 15, 1905. Serial No. 287,447.
T0 a/ZZ- whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, VICENTE SALCEDO, a citizen of the Republic of Mexico, and a resident of Apaseo, State of Guanajuato, Mexico, have invented a new and Improved Vaginal Irrigating Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.-
The purpose of the invention is to provide a hygienic device adapted especially for irrigating the female genital organs and protecting them during such operation, which device is externally applied and is provided with means for ventilation and for the introduction of the cannula of a syringe or like instrument without bringing the same in contact with the person and also means for conducting the vaginal refuse to a distant receptacle, thus preventing soiling of the clothing and bedding.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which may be successfully used as an aseptic urinal by women in bed and by children of both sexes and which can be as conveniently used by any of said persons in any natural position, either lying down, sitting up, or standing.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both iigures.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improved device, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the same, the section being taken practically on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The body A of the device is hollow and is made of porcelain, hard rubber, or other waterproof material and is as light as possible consistent with strength. The major or front portion 10 of the body is oval in crosssection, but its rear or outer portion 1 1 is transversely semicircular and slopes or curves downward and outward from the top, so that the outer bottom portion 12 of the body is quite contracted, as is shown in Fig. 2, and an outlet .13 is produced at this point surrounded by a collar 14, upon which one end of an outlet-tube 15 is secured, the other end of the tube being adapted to be placed in a rece tacle when the device is in use.-
T e inner end of the body A is provided y with a full oval opening 16, surrounded by an l outwardly-curled smooth continuous rib 17, so that when the open end 16 or mouth ofthe device is pressed against the iiesh around the genital organs in the application of the device the patient will not be incommoded in the slightest degree, and in order that the device may be applied with a maximum 0f comfort and so that the rib 17 will truly conform to the contour of the ilesh and prevent leakage the front face of the rib is concaved at its side sections, as shown at 18 in the drawings. A flange 19 divides the rear inclined portion of the device from the forward ortion, which ange facilitates holding the evice in position and the inclined rear or outer surface 11 in addition to being transversely convex is rendered more or less undulating to afford a better grip for the hand.
An air-vent 20 is provided at the top of the body A, surrounded by a collar 21., and in the outer or rear inclined section 11 of the body an opening 22 is made, which when the device is used as a urinal is closed by a suitable stopper but when the device is to be used for irrigating purposes a nipple B is fitted in said opening in such manner that it has a downward and forward inclination or an inclination in direction of the center of the mouthopening 16, as is shown in Fig. 2. The head 23 of the nipple, which is within the body A, is provided with a central opening 24, through which the cannula of a syringe or other instrument may be passed to supply the necessary irrigating iiuid. The outer end of the nipple is entirely open, and preferably the said nipple B consists of an outer or body section 25 of a pliable material and an inner stiffeningtube 26.
This device is externally applied and is effective for the purpose intended. It is obvious that by its use the clothing and bedding will not become soiled by the liquid supplied to and passed out from the body.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A vaginal irrigating device, comprising a tubular body having its front portion oval in cross-section and provided with a straight bottom wall, and its rear portion transversely semicircular and curved downwardly and outwardly from the top to the bottom, the said body being provided with an external flange at the junction of its front and rear portions,
IIO
a vent in its top, an outlet-opening in the lower end of the rear portion at the bottom of the body, and an opening in the said rear portion above the outlet for the purpose set forth. v
2. A vaginal irrigating device, comprising a tubular body oval in cross-section and having a downwardly and outwardly inclined outer or rear end surface, in the lower portion of which an outlet-opening is made and above the outlet an inlet opening, said body being also provided with an air-vent in the top, an oval'mouth provided with concaved sides and a marginal outwardly-curled rib, a nipple removably held in the said inlet-opening, the head whereof is within the body of the device and is provided with an aperture for the passage of a cannula, and an outlet-pipe connected with said body at the outlet-opening.
3. .In a vaginal irrigating device, the combination with a tubular body having an outlet and an opening in its rear wall above the outlet, of a nipple removably held in the said opening and having a conical head projecting into the body, the outer projecting end of the nipplebeing open and its head rovided with an opening to receive the cannu a of a syringe.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VICENTE SALCEDO.
