Description

(NoModeL) H. D. BABGOCK.
STRAW CUTTER.
No. 473,492. Patented Apr. 26, 1892.
kill!!! .llllllll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY D. BABOOOK, OF LEONARDSVILLE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES H. OHILDS & (10., OF UTIOA, NElV YORK.
STRAW-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 473,492, dated April 26, 1892. Application filed October 12,1891. Serial No. 408,486. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. BABCOCK, of Leonardsville, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in StrawOutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acco1npanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in straw-cutters.
In the drawings which accompany and form apart of this specification, and in which similar letters and figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cutter. Fig. 2 is a front end elevation of the same, with knife and connected parts removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 2, detached from each other. Fig. 4 is a detail showing a gage for regulating thelength of the cut. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the knife. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the hanger for the knife. Fig. 7 is a plan View of the knife, hanger, and gage. Fig. 8 is a section taken on a line with A B of Fig. 6. Fig. 9 is an elevation of the same parts shown in Fig. 6 as they would'appear seen from the right. Fig. 10 is a section of the device taken on a line with O D of Fig. 2. Fig. 11 is a detail showing a cam used in the device. Fig. 12 is a cross-section of the cam.
This invention relates more particularly to that class of cutters known as lever-cutters; and it consists of a feed-box 1, mounted on legs 2 2 and 3 and provided with a metal frame 4 at the front end of box, forming in part a shear-edge 5, and also support for the knife-hanger 6. The hanger 6 is cone-shaped and provided with a shoulder 7 and supported between walls a and b on an angular projection 8 of frame 4. Between the Walls a. and b and between the pieces 6 and Sis provided a Wedge-shaped cam 9, provided with a central opening, through which passes bolt 10, as well as through an opening in hanger 6 and slot 0 in piece 8, and which bolt operates to secure the hanger to the frame. On the hanger 6 is mounted by thimble-bearings 11 cutterlever 12, the thimble 11 being formed integral therewith. The thimble is held on the hanger by nut 15 and washer 16. On the lever 12 is secured knife 13 and gage 14. Over the front end of the feed-box is provided a coveringplate 17, which engages under a rib on frame 4, (see Fig. 10,) and the legs 2 are secured to the feed-box by perforated cars 18 and setscrews 19 in the metal frame. The legs 3 are removably secured to the box by bolt 20, and it will be observed that the machine can be completely knocked down.
The operation of the lever-cutter is too well known to warrant description, and the particular feature to which attention need be called, besides the construction which permits the machine to be readily and completely knocked down, is the adjustment of the knifehanger. This is effected to a nicety by rotating slightly in one direction or the other campieoe 9, so that the knife 13 may be made to shear throughout its whole length by the shear-edge 5. In shipping the knife and lever may be removed from the hanger 6 by removing nut 15 and washer 16. Likewise the hanger may be removed, if desired, by loosening the bolt 10 and sliding the hanger back until the head becomes disengaged from slot 0.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a cutting-machine, of a feed-box, a shearing-edge located at the end of the feed-box, a slotted projection extending substantially at right angles to the shearing-edge on the box side thereof, a knifehanger secured on the projection, an interposed wedge-shaped rocking adj usting-cam, a securing-bolt, and a lever-knife mounted on the hanger, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a cutting-machine, of a feed-box, a frame 4, secured to the front end of the feed-box and having a shearingedge, a slotted projection on the box side of the frame, a knife-hanger secured on the projection, with an interposed wedgeshaped rocking cam 9, a bolt securing the hanger and the tfzalnl,1 and a lever-knife, substantially as set ort 3. The combination, in a cutting-machine, edge 5, secured to legs 2 2, which legs are reof a feed-box, a shearing-edge located at the movably secured to the end of the feed-box, end of the feed-box, a projection 8, extending and the cutting-lever connected to the frame on the box side thereof and having wallaand b, 4, substantially as set forth.
5 a knife-hanger mounted on the projection be- In Witness whereof I have affixed my signa- I5 tween the walls, an interposed adj listing-cam ture in presence of two witnesses.
9, a securing-bolt, and a lever-knife mounted HENRY D. BABOOCK. on the hanger, substantially as set forth. Witnesses:
4. The combination, in a cutting-machine, JOHN S. CASEY,
10 of the feed-box, the frame 4, havingshearing- M. E. ROBINSON.
