FISHING-ROD HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,073, dated April 19, 1892.

To. all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, TIMOTHY LEMAIRE, of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented a newrand useful Improvement in Fishing-Rod Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements upon that class of devices which are adapted to be secured to a support and made to receive and hold a fishing-rod in position for fishing; and my improvements on this class of devices relate more particularly to the construction of the clamp by which the device is attached to a support, and also to the construction of a fishing-rod holder proper, by which the apparatus may be attached to the horizontal edge of a boat-seat or to the vertical edge of the boat-gunwale, and in either position hold a rod for iishing. I

Accompanying this specification to form a part of it there is a sheet of drawings con-` taining three figures illustrating my invention, with the same designation of parts by letter reference used in all of them.

Of the illustrations, Figure l is a perspective of my improved fishing-rod holder shown as applied to the vertical gunwale of a boat.

Fig. 2 is a perspective of the same apparatus shown as applied to the horizontal edge of a boat-seat, and Fig. 3 is a section taken centrally and vertically on the lineas c of Fig. 2.

The several parts of the apparatus thus illustrated are designated by letter reference and the function of the parts is described as follows:

The letter C designates a clamp made with arms a and a2, with the latter one of the armsy provided with a screw S, which is threaded into so as to pass through the arm a2, and on its inner end there is swiveled onto said screw S a pinch-plate P, made with prongs p2. As thus made, when the edge of the seat S2 or the edge of the gunwale G is entered between the arms a a2 of the clamp, and screw S is operated by the finger-piece F to engage with the entered edge of the seat or gunwale, the latter will be firmly held in position by the arm a2 and the screw and pinch-plate P. The clamp as thus made and arranged is of an ordinary and usual construction considered apart from other features of construction combined therewith.

The letter B designates a socket-pin projected from the side of the clamp, and B2 another socket-pin projected from the exterior of the arm a', and D a socket-sleeve adapted to be passed on over either of said pins B or B2.

The letter T designates a set-screw arranged in the socket-sleeve D, which set-screw is pro- `vided with a inger-piecef2, by which said setscrew may be screwed inwardly, so as to engage with that one of the pins B B2 on which the socket-sleeve D is entered to hold the latter securely in place.

The letter W designates a slideway made in the upper end of the socket-sleeve D. This slideway is rectilinear in form, and T2 designates another set-screw made in the socketsleeve D, directly opposite this slideway W.

The letter H designates the fishing-rod holder proper, which is preferably made in a C form and adapted to be entered within the slideway W and adj ustably secured -therein by means of the set-screw T2.

'The upturned arms C C2 of the holder H, at their upper ends, are made to receive and retain the fishing-rod, and for this purpose are constructed as follows: The arm C is made with a rod-rest R of a semicircular form, that is upcurved at each end and arranged transversely on the upper end of the arm and of such form that the rod R3 will rest therein. The upper end of the arm C2 of the holder I-I is made of a hook form h2, and under which that part of the rod back of that in the rest R can be inserted, so as to be held by the hook form of the arm with the latter over the rod. As thus made, with the fishing-rod resting in the support R', with the rod back of where thus resting passed in under the hook h2, the rod is firmly held in position. When it is desired to raise or lower the outer end of the rod, the holder H can be moved in the slideway W for such positioning of the rod, and the holder can be secured in such desired position by means of the set-screw T2, so that the outer end'of the rod may be placed at varied conditions of elevation, as may be desired.

To adapt the device for attachment to a seat or the gunwale of a boat, the sleeve-socket D, in which the holder proper is placed, can be inserted on the pin B or B2.

As thus made and arranged, a fish-rod holder is adapted to such varied positions of loca- IOO tion and use as are convenient for the fisherman, either as to attachment to the boat or measure of elevation given to the outer end of the rod. Y

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. In a fishing-rod holder, the combination, with a clamp constructed and arranged to connect with the Vertical gunwale of a boat or the horizontal edge of a boat-seat and provided with a socket-pin upon one side and also at one end of said clamp, of a socketsleeve adapted to be entered upon either of said socket-pins and held in place thereon by means of a set-screw, and a rod-holder constructed to be adjustably connected to said socket-sleeve, substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.

2. Al fishing-rod holder made with two upcurved arms, one of which at its upper end is constructed with acircular rest for the rod andthe other end of which holder is made with a hook under and into which the rod is entered to be held in place, a slideway made in a supporting socket-sleeve for the insertion of the holder, and a set-screw in the socket-sleeve adapted to engage with said holder to secure the same Within said slide- Way, substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.

3. 'lhe combination, with the clamp C, made with the arms a 0,2, screw S, and socket-pins B B2, of the socket-sleeve D, made with the setscrews T T2 and slideway YV, and the holder H, made with upcurved arm C', having the rest R', and the upcurved arm C2, made with the hook h2, constructed and arranged to 0perate Substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.
